Just saw a Ford comercial.....they are offering up to $3000 fo any trade in, as if the last round didn't get rid of enouph decent older cars, here we go again Quote...... Ford said anyone who participates in the federal program and buys a new Ford or Lincoln vehicle can receive $1,000 toward the purchase of a new car or compact truck, $2,000 toward the purchase of a crossover or sport utility vehicle and $3,000 toward the purchase of a truck or luxury Lincoln model. http://www.wheels.ca/ford-offers-up-to-3000-in-clunker-trade-in-program/
Sooooo,, lemme see if I have this right.... I get 3000$ additional trade in on my 15+ year old truck that gets about 15mpg(combined) for a brand new spanking truck that gets mebbe 15 mpg (combined)AND gives me a huge car payment to go with it...... *thinking* hhhmmm,,, **thinking** ,,,,,,,,, Thinking I dunn need no stinking car payment and especially in this economy... .
I know, it makes no sence other than IMO they will sucker people who can't aford a new car into buying one thinking they are getting a deal........ with monthly payments.
You sure that wasn't an old, recorded commercial? The article you linked to was published in Sept. 2009. Wait...are you driving one of these?
http://www.ford.ca/?searchid=google|YtQByTFb http://www.fordclassic.ca/site/recycleyourride/en/ Quote...... And now, in an effort to recycle even more, the program has been expanded to include 2006-model-year-or-older vehicles. So even more people can receive between $500 and $300045 in incentives towards purchasing or leasing some of our smartest, safest, and fuel-efficient Ford vehicles. Like the Escape, Edge, F-150 and Super Duty. Even the all-new 2013 Fusion.
Great, so now they'll give us a $3000 discount towards cars that are already $10,000 over priced and won't last long enough for us to qualify for a similar program in the future. All that AND a convenient 5 year payment plan. Poorly veiled attempt at getting long-running, well-built cars off of the road to ensure we have no choice but to buy the junk The Big Three are foisting off as quality vehicles these days, if you asked me.
NO NO NO... now stop all that thinking nonsense! Thinking is what got us into trouble in the first place! Now just do your part and get over your head in debt and just bite the bullet and get a new one! Its for the good of the economy of our country, right? Yeah... no kool-aid for me either, thank you..
I bought ONLY one new vehicle in my life and it will be the ONLY one. I am personally NOT going to buy another new one in the remainder of my life. I have enough preexisting vehicles and the talents to work on them to have my cake and eat it too. And be totally able to afford said cake.
Over 40 years after he died, I can still remember my grandfather telling me it was a mug's game to borrow money for a depreciating asset! Of course, at the age of 7 or 8, I had to ask what a depreciating asset was! I'll stay away from all the new junk on the road. I don't like the way they drive, I hate the way they look, and I refuse to drive around in tin foil! At least, tin foil that is formed to look like a car. Folded to form a hat, well...
There are only a handful of new vehicles I would ever consider buying anyway. The $19,995 Dodge Grand Caravan American Value Edition is my top pick, because it's cheap, it seats seven, gets 25mpg highway, and you can still add that useful Stow & Go option for about $1200, and the rebate gives you $500 of that back. The Ford Fusion Hybrid ($28K) is another and with 47mpg city OR highway it's worth it. The Chevy Cruze 1LT with manual transmission is my third choice (about $20,375 after rebate with tech & safety packages, easy to get 35-40mpg in it too), and the fourth would be a Dodge Ram Tradesman Quad Cab 1500 with the 3.6L V6 and that 8-speed automatic ($29,420 sticker after 1250 rebate, a 25mpg hwy 6-passenger truck, not bad). But in all these cases they can be bought used for less, with similar fuel mileage, equipment levels, and it's just better to save money in my opinion. The 2008 model Caravan with the 3.3L engine gets the same mileage with a tougher 4-speed automatic and I can find those used for well under $10K, in fact I can get one as a used taxi minivan and I've seen them for $2500-$4000 around Dallas. Repaint in a non-obvious-taxicab color and it's all good. The Fusion Hybrid from 2010 would cost half as much. The Cruze came out in 2011 but I see plenty of them from $10K-$12K used. And the pickup truck, well, my mother in law's 1999 Silverado, bought new, extended cab short bed, with the 5.3L V8, 3.42 axle, and automatic still gets 16-18 in town and 22-23 on highway trips. Nothing wrong with that and she is pushing 260,000 miles. I could get a similar truck equipped like that for less than $5000, I've seen some for $2500-3000 still looking as nice as hers.
in 5 years when the warenty is up on my honeys Escape, I will get her something new, but I'll wait for another zero intrest financing offer, look at consumor reprts and ask people who own what I'mlooking at for there opinion. I'm not gona scrap a car to save a buck when zero intrest saves you more in the long run. In a way I feel kinda traped as... Ya buy a new anything today and IMO your a fool to keep it after the warenty expires. What really scares me is just how fugly cars will look design wise in 5 years. I also have no faith in a used anything that is a couple years old.
Lol! I currently have the newest car I have ever owned and only just bought it in November. I will never have a car payment and don't see why anyone would buy an item that depreciates 25% or more the second it rolls out of the lot! Oh and if gas was still say $2 something a gallon I would be driving a 78-79 F-150 4X4 for my daily driver!
My requirements were simple when I bought my new Ford in early 07. I was tired of fixing things everyday so I wanted something with a warranty. I bought a Focus new off the Ford dealer lot. I wanted an american make car. So once gm and chrysler took my tax money to ensure the uaw stayed employeed while joe taxpayer lost his job, savings, retirement, home, everything, I didn't want a gm or chrysler. The logical choice was Ford since they refused my tax dollars. There's very few new cars id even look at today. None intrest me at all. If I did have to buy another new car, id buy another Ford. Maybe a Mustang GT or something.
