And what goes with old trucks........old tractors http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/auctionview.cgi?lid=2930016&kwd=&zip=03741&category=0
Back in 1994 when we moved to Florida I considered buying an old tractor to mow the lawn with. I could have used it and sold it now for a profit. Where we are at this time I could barely handle this one.
Then, try one of these, Sir: Like old trucks, old tractors can become evil, also. Especially, if they don't have rollbars. Every now and then, farmers have been crushed, just because their tractors felt like doing summer saults. If any, this one is my favorite, from your selection. It's oil crisis-proof and looks scary:
I'd guess more old farmers died from roll over old tractors than from old horses. Father of son in law on wife's side was crushed to death on a small old farm tracter while working on his hilly hillside farm. I rememer lots similar accidents on rolling hills farms around the midwest and the south. Imagine the places farmers stuck fingers in that old equipment. We still live near where several great brands of farm equipment have been made.
What a bunch of great stuff!!! A few of those belong in a museum. I'll side with ivy on that big case steam tractor. I'm not sure I ve ever seen one that complete. Wow! Really cool.
I guess, we'll never know how many of them were suicides. When people jump in front of trains, it's obvious.
We used to attend a lot of farm shows like Des Moines, Iowa thrasherman's reunion, several fairly large Illinois shows, and even at Daytona Speedway at the big rod show they have a small steam and tractor area. It's interesting watching old equipment actually being operated. There are a lot of older guys into stationary engines and old equipment. Even the Henry Ford museum has a lot of old junk.
Not always suicides. My wife's female friend was on a train trestle above a river we all used to swim in. Young adults would dive off. For some reason the girl didn't run or jump off the trestle when a train came. I've also heard of stupid or slow people crossing between RR cars and the train start up or another train on the next track ran over them. Only recently in the county some fool drove around the lowered RR crossing arm to beat a train. It was a tie. Sometimes evolution reverses. As for some older farm tractors with narrow center front wheels, they were as dangerous as those first off road 3-wheelers. At least 3-wheeled golf carts and 3-wheeled cars had a wider frame to keep from rolling over.
