So I stopped for my morning beverage this morning, and when I looked across the street at the Lincoln/Mercury Dealer, I saw this sitting outside...

As I stood drooling, the elderly owner walked out the door. He bought the car new in 1978. It has always been garaged and has never seen winter. It has 86K miles, and I couldn't find a spot of rust anywhere. It is a 6 seat model with a 400.

I asked him what he was hoping to get for it and he stated, "I was asking $3500, but now I'm just looking to get an offer."

I'm not a Ford guy (the "F" word is not allowed in my house), but I'd buy this car in a heartbeat if I had any chance of digging up the money... The paint is original and has a beautiful shine (though not my favorite color...), and there was hardly any fade to the woodtrim. The seats are a tweed material, and looked great. I think it had power windows/locks, but I have to admit I was looking more at the outside.

I'm guessing $2000 would buy this car... Anyone wanna loan me some money???

:29: I'm not a fan of that particular vintage, but I too sure hate to pass on a deal due to shortage of funds, even if it's just a couple of grand. :90:

    :(

I would love to have another '78. Both my '78 now and my last '77 where just great road cars.

The license plate looks like a Massachusetts antique plate. I couldn't quite read it. Vermont maybe?

Any how if he's running a antique plate I can't imagine why he'd sell it soooo cheap if he knows what he has and it's in such good shape.

If it was here he'd have my money in about 10 minutes.(y)

442, where in Vermont was this car? I can't believe it's lived in Vermont its entire life and it's in such pristine condition. That is a find and a half. Do you really think he'd let it go for $2K? I prefer the earlier 70's Squires, but I always thought 1/2 the fun of driving a wagon is the size of it, so why not own the largest one ever made. (You'll recall 442, my brother and I own a home in Chester.)
Did he mention why he wants to sell it?

I can't get myself off this page. That car is breathtakingly gorgeous. I would much rather have this long roof than my CP. I'll bet I could get $2K for the Merc, don't you think? That'd be the only way I could afford this beauty is if I sold my present wagon, but I'd do it in a heartbeat, no question.

They are the old low number Vermont plates... You can only keep them if you've had them from the "old days"

I'm telling you - this car is beautiful. I didn't get to ask why he was selling it, but I did get a pic of the for sale sign with his phone number... I'd feel funny posting it, but PM me and I'll be glad to share it with you.

If someone wants this wagon, I'd be glad to give it a thorough going over and give you a fair and honest description over the phone (I have the stars pretty well cleared out of my eyes now...). :2_thumbs_up_-_animaI could park it at my place for a couple of weeks if anyone wanted to come and get it or have it shipped... Heck, come stay at my house if you want...

I saw it in Essex Junction. He told me he had been a car salesman in Morrisville in the '70's when he bought it. It's a local number, so he is somewhere in the Burlington area I believe...

I'm guessing at the $2000 number, but even at $3000 you'd be getting it for 1/2 price in my estimation. If I had the $$, I'd buy it and post it on ebay for $7500 buy it now with a starting bid of $4000. I'm sure it would sell...

Your not the only one. It simply is a well presurved model. And I do like the color of it, reminds me of my '76 LTD 4 door Brougham I had in tech school.

    I like that model. I prefer a 77 with the 460,leather and fulll power, but...If it's a good runner....this car is a STEAL even at $3500.
One thing....he was an old car salesman.....why is this car so cheap? He HAS to know it's value.

The 77 LTD's unfortunately aren't worth a tremendous amount of money. There's a clean example for sale locally for 1400 with 41,000 miles. It's got a blown head gasket, but that isn't a hard fix on a 77. Besides that the car's real clean, and I am putting my Buick on the market with hopes of swinging this wagon.

i really question that is is worth more then $3500. its a later model smog car. yeah its mint but come on. it more thirsty than a camel fresh in from the trade route. we love wagons, but the "normal" people lump them in with mini vans. its not old enough for the hot rod crowd, so only people like us want it. I think its priced right

I'm surprised he's asking that much for that 73 without a photo. There's no wagon from the 70s that I would pay that kind of money for. The 1960s and prior wagons, especially mid to late 60's wagons can bring some cash for their big blocks with real power as they hadn't been emissionized.

Not to mention the boats of the 50's with their big fins and the 40's models which make great surfer woodies.

70's wagons don't have a big market. They're just the grocery getters our folks had when we were kids. I love them, but part of why I love them is because I can get a clean one cheap. I'm not insulting them, I want a 77 LTD and own an 87 Caprice, not the desirables on the wagon parade, but they're what I like and even though I've never met anybody impressed by my wagon, it's still my favorite car I've ever owned.
