Hey guys. I bought a 72 Chevy wagon a few weeks ago. It was one of those barn finds we all hear about. It had sat in there for 16years with the rear window down. Field mice had been in there along with close to 100 dirt dobers nest. The seller got it started to load on a trailer and I barely got it started to unload it. I immediately started tearing it down of the interior, it was too dirty to even sit in. Well after removing seats, carpet, headliner and everything that I could unscrew or unbolt, the car was found to be solid as a rock. The only rust on the entire vehicle, other than the surface rust from faded paint, was in the spare tire well. Since I will be rebuilding as a 'driver' and not a 'trailer queen' I repaired it with sheet metal. I have ordered all new headliner, carpet, dash pad, and sound deadener. The car looks like it is 2 years old underneath, besides the dual Flowmaster 40s and headers. I ordered a new Edelbrock 600 and got the car running smooth and it finally quit smoking. I guess from sitting up all those years, it just needed to clear it's throat. I also ordered 69-70 "SS" wheels and BFG T/As, 225/70/14 tires. I have found only 3 small door dings that need to be fixed before painting . Oh yeah I removed the windshield and had a small hole in the upper passenger window area. I cut it out and welded in new metal and ordered a new windshield. Anyway, I have it in my workshop and work on it everyday, bringing it back to life. Glad I found this site and look forward to being a part of the group. greg
Looks like a decent wagon, the kind most of us can only dream of finding someday. Welcome to the site and hope that you start a build up thread and keep us updated with progress reports and pics to accompany. Marcar, there are 8 pics if you look under his username, right under his post count just click the number 8
Hey Greg, Glad you found us! Welcome...you are already part of the group! Great wagon you found there! Looking forward to seeing your progress in bringing it back to life. David
Congrats on the find Greg. Unbelieveable that someone would let a car sit with the back window down - but you see it all the time. Sad, but glad you ended up with a good car out of the deal. Nice cars (we're redoing a 70 SS right now), and I know how much work they are to put back together. Lots of fun though. Barry
Nice find, Greg. Looks like you've got a great solid car to start from. How frustrating that the window was left open. I'll bet the interior would've been in a whole lot better shape if somebody had taken the 30 seconds 16 years ago and put the fool thing up. Good luck and welcome to forum.
Hey Greg, be sure to drain that fuel tank. I had the unpleasant experience years ago on a low mileage antique, of letting the fuel tank get to low. The fuel pump sucked up a bunch of muck that was sitting at the bottom of the tank, ruining the fuel pump and a valve.
Gotta be one of the few sites where so many have a 'barn find' story like that. 16 years just sitting. Good for you!
