I got bored a few years ago and being a fan of these cars did some research and compiled a list of the #s for all of the 71-76 GM wagons..... just thought I would post them to see how many of each were made. I wonder what year/model/make there are the most of out there now?

The "highest production model" is the 1973 Impala 2-seat wagon - 46,940 were made (where are all of them now?) [IMG]
The "lowest production model" is the 1975 Custom Cruiser 2-seat model without woodgrain - only 1,458 were made.

Thanks for posting!!! Production numbers always facinate me, the list just confirms that the price of gas always effects car sales hard, just look at the last year of production before the 1st oil crisis in Oct. 73. All the divisions of GM had great sales years, and then sales of 74's & 75's fell to about 1/2 of the 73 levels, by 76 sales had started to recover, but still down.
Does all that seem familure 30 years later?

It does seem familiar, but I think the big difference will be that they won't recover if they continue the same way. This time it will need a big change from all the manufacturers if the want to survive.

Yep big thanks!! Where did you get the figures if I may ask? The std catalog of American cars doesn't' show the Chevy figures. Kind if interesting to see that Chevy made +100k full size wagons each year and that Pontiac as a brand is the one that made the fewest..

As for 74/75 it was down on all fronts even if smaller cars sold they still sold less of those too just less less so to say :). Just like today even the Japs needs to offer 0% loans to keep sales up..

    Cheers Dyna

No problem... I was glad to post them.

I had these saved on my computer from a few years ago, but if I recall, I either got the Chevy #'s out of the standard Catalog of Chevrolets, or another Chevrolet book I have. True, the std. catalog of American cars does not really break down the Chevy wagon #s, which I always hated, but was very happy when I found these detailed Chevy #s.

Yes, the Pontiacs are quite rare. I would love to have any 71-73 Grand Safari with the 3rd seat. About a mile south of here there is a old junkyard that belonged to a man that my grandfather knew... he died a couple of years ago, but he had a 1971 Grand Safari wagon, but it was only a 2-seater, which is a rare one, because only around 3600 were made. It was white and had the woodgrain option. It was in the woods and even in the early 90s it had set so long that the rear quarters had rusted off of it. :( Eventually someone got the 455 out of it. About a year ago, I could have bought a 1972 Grand Safari, but it too was a 2-seat model and it was oddly optioned. The only options it seem to have was woodgrain, luggage rack, AM radio and A/C. It did not have cruise, tilt, power windows/locks, power gate, etc. In fact, my 72' Caprice wagon was higher optioned.

I guess the rarest clamshell I have ever seen was a 1972 Buick Estate Wagon 2-seat wagon that was on the internet a couple of years ago... it had NO and I mean NO options! NO A/C, NO radio, no power options, standard belts, no luggage rack, etc! Someone had even deleted the radio. I guess the next odd one I have even saw was a 1971 Chevy Bel-Air Townsman 3-seat wagon that was nice optioned - it had A/C, power windows and locks (very rare) FM radio and even had cruise and tilt if I recall.:yup:

Gosh that is odd, the options I mean.. Good thing you kept those figures.. well well my search is still on for a Buick with 3seat, wood, rack, AC and power windows...

Funny thing with the one in up state NY simply dont' want to send any info to me, even if it hasn't sold it yet? I guess he want to sell to a local derby guy only

Maybe one of you US guys could write to him/her for me to see what is up -- I mean act as a go between -- however it's most likely so that the car is very rusty or have a very busted interior...

I asked him if it had the 3rd seat and power windows/locks. We will see what happens. I hate it when people will not respond to Craigslist ads.

I never knew these were so rare! I had a 1972 Pontiac Grand Safari with the 3rd seat (I believe) and the 455. I don't know the options anymore, but I it had no woodgrain or luggage rack.
Really wish I never sold it...

He replied! Almost instantly @ 10:18am! He said it had power windows AND power locks, but would check on the 3rd seat and get back with me. I told him the easiest way was to see if it had a 60/40 back seat. Lets see.

Yeah, there was a Mercedes in Raleigh I was interested in on Craigslist and I emailed and emailed and never got a reply.

I ended up buying another today though... a 1988 300SEL. A nice one. Will post some photos of my new ride. Wish it was a wagon. :D

Isn't it a problem to get the '76 out of the US without a title (customs)? Or would only a bill of sale do the trick?

To some extent yes it makes it a bit harder -- there is ways to export without a title. The problem can be later on when you try to title the car in say UK or Germany and you don't have that title -- what you have is an registration doc from the DMV -- it's a doc basically telling customs that you are the legal owner of the car..
