Has anyone installed a CPP 500 series box and did you like it? They look better than the 605 boxes.

Who in their right mind would want a 1955 Chevy handyman wagon?

Somewhere hidden in the threads I asked about adding power steering to a 1955 Chevy station wagon. I still haven't done it. Be nice to get some answers on this.

Is there something different about power steering in a wagon? I don't think so. My 56 210 2 door sedan has a 605 box and I installed a power steering pump, hooked up my Ididit tilt column and life is good. My understanding in that a 500 box would bolt in place of a 605, if that's your preference.

I've read a lot of things about different power steering for tri-five Chevys. So basically one of those new boxes and a modern column is all that's needed? I hate to change from my rebuilt original column but don't want to mess with the rag joint and other work involved.
I also don't really like the idea of the MMII type rack set up.
A used 605 box used to be cheap and in most junk yards.
I don't care what they look like as long as they are not too difficult to hook up and it works.

If I remember correctly the '55 to '57 didn't have a rag joint. It was a good 12 years ago but I changed to the 605 and a Ididit column in our 55. Before that my dad and I restored a '57 210 del ray and put a 605 box but modified the original column and shaft and I remember cutting the shaft and adding a rag joint. The original went straight into the manual box. Any how I have had no problems cruisin with the 605 now not sure of any fancy maneuvering with it but just driving it around has been fine.

Yes, that's that part I didn't want to mess with. Plus the cutting of the original column.
The wider front tires make slow driving and steering hard. It's just fine on the open road.

when I got my 56, the 605 was already bolted in. It had a steering column from a Pontiac, but no shifter. There wasn't a power steering pump. The biggest problem I had was getting hoses with the correct fittings to put it together. It took longer to get the Ididit column out of the box than to bolt it in. The 605 box was either new or rebuilt, it's all together now, and no leaks.

    Tri-Five power steering

Thank you. After I get moved I will most likely check it out. What else can I do in Illinois in the winter?
I have a floor shifter so the swap to an after market column shouldn't be a problem. I know here where I am NAPA makes about any hose anyone would want so that shouldn't be a problem.
Right now I'm doing what I often do..... day dreaming. You should see the remodeled two car garage in our new old home....... in my mind!;)

Was out in garage earlier when I noticed a leak under '55...thru my hungover bloodshot eyes, look like power steering pump started leaking so although not the box at fault, this thread jinxed me. First issue I've had with the P.S. at all on it....maybe I should just pick up where I left off last night and have another beer! :drink:

Hmmm.........drank a bunch of beer yesterday, but no hangover. I looked under my 56, no leaks.........however, I backed my Chevelle out of the garage, and guess what started leaking.........AGAIN!
