I have the chance to pick up a 1987 cavalier base wagon, 2.8l v6, crank up windows, a/c and tilt wheel. cloth seats in good condition, with 98k only, on it. Car is incredibly decent in every way-body is good (local socal car all its life, so rust is not an issue) and it has a ton of new parts on it. It needs a cat to pass smog (300ish) and some general clean up, but seems to run fine and drive good. It is only a 3pd auto (125? w/lockup?) been a looooong time since I looked at anything like this, but I need a shop car and this one is kind of nice. I will be in it, smogged and registered under 1500.00-anyone with input on these?

I'm not a fan of the GM 2.8 V6. They are problem prone and under powered. If you want more info let me know or Google the engine by writing.....Chevy 2.8 V6 problems. The engine in the car you are looking at is right around the trouble mileage. If it hasn't already had some. They CAN go for high miles but it's rare.

I'm with Mike. For about the same money, you should be able to find a somewhat larger Chevy Celebrity /Pontiac 6000 / Buick Century / Olds Ciera. The Buick and Olds were available with the better 3.0 and 3.8 V6's

    well I lowered my offer

and thus far they have not come down enough. Based on your recomendations, I looked around some more but didn't find anything as cheap or easy to keep. we will se if they come down to my offer. FOund a 99 Saab 9-5 with a leaky head gasket cheap, in very nice shape-also found a couple mid 60s caprice wagons with big blocks but at the price of gas, not this year. They wer ealso kinda crappy condition wis eand way over priced.
