    When did Vanagons begin using inline engines?

    The last one I looked at was still a boxer design.

    VW diesel engines have always been inline engines to my knowledge, this engine is obviously newer than the original one.

    What I mean, is, inline vs. boxer regardless of fuel.

    No, I get it. I just don't think they made boxer diesel engines, at least not the era this car was from.
