1969 Mercury Monterey Custom 2-Door Hardtop for sale on BaT Auctions - ending May 9 (Lot #106,661) | Bring a Trailer Boy, aqua with white seats sure does look good.
Ten grand even is the current bid, on six days to go. The buff and shine on the paint is very well done, but the underside rust and the schmutzy engine compartment do detract a bit. Still, a 2-dr HT is tough to beat.
There's a lot of videos on Youtube with this car. It was originally at one of the Gateway dealerships( maybe St. Louis?) about 3 or 4 years ago with only 2800 miles on it. It is pretty nice. This would be a good one for Mercman Bill. Reading the comments I get a laugh at some who say "8 MPG" and such....I have had one of these exact cars for over 20 years and they aren't really that bad on fuel for a big car. And "finding one of these Montereys with drum brakes" - Come on guys - it's 1969, discs weren't universally adopted yet. BTW, I know someone back east who has a cheapy 69 Monterey with manual drums. One thing with my 69 - a lot of people have mistaken it for a Chrysler. And others that I know with similar cars share the same story. I guess they kinda look like a '69 Newport, but the shape is different. I have also had people tell me my '65 Merc looks like a Chrysler or a Continental, which I see if you're not a car guy.
Leadslead's '66 has four-wheel drums, and as long as the front drums are properly adjusted and the fluid is changed every couple years, using a syn DOT 3, they perform pretty well. Newer tech does not guarantee no accidents. Oh, and even with the Breezeway roof, there are a few who thought it was a Chrysler.
If my dad had gone to a Mercury dealer instead of going to a Ford dealer, he would have been driving this, instead of........................ This:
Absolutely nothing wrong with that car. How many ga-zillion ‘68 and ‘69 Fords were that color, Lime Gold, Pretty car still. I like it!
We had a good friend that worked at Mercury in Hazelwood. His wife drove this exact car in a 4 door. Man I always loved that combo.
Over the years I have seen a handful of sedans in that color scheme. Must've been easy for the dealers to tick off the boxes for the two tone in those colors or maybe in Eastern PA or other regions they were a promotional sale? In the sedan form, it looks good, but reminds me of a cop car....
Specially those California Highway Patrol cars. I remember Mr. Brinks car had the deluxe wheel covers. Would have loved that combo on a Marquis.
