Greetings from Sweden! I have noticed that there are many posts like this one, and I've been browsing the net for days now, without any luck. Classic car tailgate stripping seems harch business. So, my 1965 Colony Park tailgate is missing the weatherstrip (I believe it's called?), leaving a gap between the window and the outer body, which make things catch both rain and dirt, making things rust. So, since there are no refurbished seals/stripping of this kind, does anyone got any good suggestions of what to do? Maybe a very suitable universal stripping or a stripping from a diferent car model? Would be very grateful for any help. Cheers!
I don't recall if he had the same issue with the weatherstrip, and I don't have time to go through the entire thread right now, but here is a detailed restoration of a '67 Ford which should at least be similar to your car. Might be worth a look. http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/threads/1967-ford-squire-wagon-restoration.1380/
I've found some body shops that got this kind of stripping. I have now asked for sample pieces. I figure that I could maybe fix the tailgate myself with such stripping and some butyl body sealant. At least for now – it's better than more rust.
Instead of Butyl body sealer, see if you can find 3M brand yellow weatherstripping adhesive, or something similar. It's normally used as a 'contact' adhesive, by applying to both the strip and where it will sit, then once the 'tack' is dry, install the stripping and press firmly. Called 'yellow monkey snot' by American mechanics.
