My novel has been accepted for publication. The setting is Ohio in 1969 and the family drives a stick-shift Ford Station Wagon. I have described the color as purple (the color of the one my family had growing up in WA) however, I need confirmation whether this color was actually made sometime between 1958 and 1965. (The car could be a model any of those years. The Dad is a minister, modest income -- so nothing extravagant or new. What might be a realistic model, color? Must be STICK SHIFT. Any help with accuracy would be appreciated.
'58 Ford brochure - while there's no 'color chart', a lot of different colors are shown on the vehicles pictured. Click on the individual thumbnails to see full-size. http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/ford/58fair/58fair.html Same situation for 1959: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/ford/59ford/59ford.html And 1960 - Good news! There is a color they called 'Orchid Grey' (?), and it's shown on a Starliner hardtop.... http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/ford/60fod/60fod.html As to the wagon in your story, if it's a 1960 (full-size?), I would speculate it would either be a Ranch Wagon or the nicer Country Sedan.... Ranch Wagon (2-door pictured, also available as a 4-door): Country Sedan: And here's an actual 1960 Ford in the actual Orchid Grey color: I'm not sure I've ever seen a Ford STATION WAGON in that color, though. Maybe your book's character special-ordered it.
The colors in brochures and even on titles can fool a person. I never pictured Orchid Grey as being the color it shows on the above car. But if I were a kid back in those days I'd called it purple! Perhaps this is one of those 50-shades of grey. Since many people in Ohio see the world thru rose colored glasses this would be close!
