It only cost me $500 to repair my Brothers Northstar engine with the Timesert Kit, I then sold the tools for $350 to anouther person that just had to purchase the inserts. Did it without removing the engine from the car. A bit of a pain but not as bad as I thought, and less so than replacing the engine. I have no idea how much a shop would charge for this, I took my time and dissasembled it one weekend, prepped the parts and installed the inserts a few at a time during the week, and reassembled it the nest weekend, so I figure I had about 60 non rushing hours into it al together. The engine had 70,000 miles on it when the head gasket started leaking. and now has over 250,000 miles on it without an issue. If you work on your own car you can do this repair. But I would use the $5000 repair price as a bargaining chip on the purchase price of any Northstar powered car! http://www.timesert.com/html/gm.html
