:banghead3: My car has a gas smell, most of the fuel lines had been replaced but not all of them, the mechanic said they did not smell anything, seems to happen:
A right after I fuel up (especially a full tank P
    B upon acceleration

Love my wagon but the smell is driving me nuts, the mini vans are looking good (No I did not just say that) just tired of mechanic's that act like these car's are the hardest things to work on, that plus I paid $2000 what makes them think I'll go $600 or more to check it out? ANY recommendations would be welcome. I'm in the Detroit Metro Area

Its got 79,000 miles (okay I know but that is what it say's) Its been re painted and its rust is coming thru now bought it in April) The interior is vinyl but it's fried in some parts, but all the power stuff is tight like its new power windows move fast & are tight, tape deck works great (thought it looks like somebody took out the dash at one point) Like its really got 79,000 miles in parts then some of it is worn, bought it locally and this is the rust belt just hate the smell! I'm a decorative painter and will do a crocodile finish in the spring thanks sorry for the long post HELP!

Check and make sure the drain is not plugged and the hoses to the drain are still good....THere should be a drain in the opening where you fuel the car up....Check around the fuel fill area and make sure there is not a body plug missing and letting the vapors back into the car...On some cars there is a large O ring that the fuel filler pipe goe's into and the O ring may be leaking....I am just talking in general terms of car build.......A hose may be rotted off on a vent pipe to the fuel tank...The sealed filler area seal may be broken and some were of a rubber and it may be deteriated also.... The smell of fuel in a car not to much fun at all...

Sounds like the vent tube at the filler neck might be bad.

And one other place. Mine was doing the same thing, and I found out that the accelerator pump on the car was opened too much. It did the same thing after every fill, when I started it up.

On mine its an external adjustment, and I had recently rebuilt the carb, so I knew where the adjustment was. Yours is likely a different adjustment, if the other suggestions don't work first.

RATS just talked to my brother in law

He thinks they may have to drop the tank to look SO I pay for that with no real resolution! That is the rub...car gone for a day and then a bill and I'm still in a smelly car! Been there done that! Only for them to look at me a say we don't smell anything. Can I Google or look on how to do--- investigative wise on mine own?

I used to be a size 8, blond and mechanic's would listen and try to help. Now at 53, overweight, and not as attractive, its Ma'am this, or MA'Am (your so stupid how could you possibly understand what I am trying to explain! They sort of, no they do talk down to me WHICH I hate (used to help my brother tear apart his carburetor) I have an test scores which show an 85% mechanical aptitude! I can figure out how things work!

How should I approach this get a guy to go with me as a buffer so I can get something fixed? Its so frustrating when you have no funds to waste. Or I'll drive all winter with the window cracked! RATS! RATS! RATS! How do you find an honest mechanic, who will treat you like you can conprhend what is wrong? If you guys were me how would you handle this? (No I can not lose 80 pounds before it gets real cold) LOL Thanks

I found this I'll try it

Here is what I found on the internet:I can try this on my own right?

The vent tube probably came loose.

If you look in the back wheel well you'll see that it bump out a little near the back, that's where the filler neck runs down. Get under there with a light and pry back on the fender liner a bit, you should be able to see a smaller line that runs up to the filler neck. Reach a paw up there, sort of tracing it by touch, and make sure it is connected.
If it is, then it may be blocked somehow and need to be cleaned or replaced. Cover that next if need be

    hmmm...just had thunk Hunni...:)

you ve never noticed a leak anywhere?

yours is an 88 right?....it has that stupid 'gas fume recircualtory' system in it !

pop the hood...look around the engine compartment...should be some cloth style hoses (1" diameter or so)..that come off the engine and go to a box on the fender well(passenger side front)(i think)..and make sure that they are all still good (not ripped)...
I seem to remember this from my 86 CP...but im sure someone will correct me:rofl:

(sorry for the explanation...trying to keep it simple...and...its been a while since i was under the hood of a "newer" car):)

Like an Olympic medal, finding one alive...

I was in a lineup this morning to get new winter tires, at Walmart. Got chatting with the guys behind me. We have a national chain of stores called Canadian Tire. They haven't sold a Canadian tire since 1980, but the guy was telling me that he asked for a new starter to install himself. The salesrep wouldn't sell it to him unless he spent $120 for testing it! They bill out their grease-monkeys at $91 per hour, plus shop supplies plus taxes!!!!! They get these kids for Minimum wage, push them through an afternoon of monkey-wrenching and nail consumers.

My Ford dealer charges out his certified mechanics at $50 per hour! Canadian Tire lost me, after that bit of news.

Anyway, no love with the Snow tires. Walmart only had three guys in the shop, and after 15 bookings for today, they were full. Back at 7:00 AM tomorrow.

Rev and others have pointed out a few details you can check yourself, try those first.

Don't forget Autozone for their online repair info.

    Good luck.

When you walk around the car, where does the smell seem strongest?
    What about the engine compartment?
When do you notice it the most often?
-Before starting, or after turning it off?
-When accelerating, or idling, cruising or braking?
