Mine was a triple green 1972 Plymouth Suburban station wagon. It had a 383 2-bbl, air, factory AM/FM, wheelcovers, and it was a six-passenger car. This was in 1977. Gave squat for it because of the "high gas prices" then - sixty-five cents/gallon! Drove it for about a month or so. What a great drive-in car! NOT the car that I used to pick up a date with, though - that's what Dad's old '54 Willys was for - the girl's father would figure I wouldn't be creative to try to deflower their fair-haired daughters to get laid in a CJ-3B!!! The wagon was great for the pursuit of nooky, that is for sure!:29:

    1972 Plymouth wagon. Ahhh, memories!:yahoo:

My very first was a 1958 Hillman wagon. I owned it for one hour and 35 minutes. I bought it for $150 at one town west of my home, pulled up to fill it, and the station owner ran out and traded me a nice 1958 Wolsely sedan and $200 more than I paid for the Hillman, and filled up the Wolsely. Drove home in it, and sold it two days later for $400, and bought a 1966 Monza Corvair with the turbo engine for $300. Then no wagons until my first new 1981 Fairmont Futura wagon. The 1975 T&C came later.

Yeah, wagons weren't chick magnets back then in the early 70's.

Does a Carryall count? I learned to drive in my dad's 55 Chevy Carryall. "My" first one was a 62 Chevy Carryall that I did a 3 inch top chop and installed a 392 Olds engine. That was early-mid 70s.
My wife remended me that we bought a 82 Subaru wagon, new. I've tried to forget that one.

A 1968 Mercury Colony Park, blue inside and out. Mighty 390 with automatic. The next door lady who'd owned it since it was new, sold it to my Mom. While I was in the Army,my Mom and older brother had driven it till it had no front brakes left, then let it sit. It sat for almost nine months. The deal I worked with my Mom was, I get it up and running, it's mine. There was more wrong with it than just bad brakes. It took almost three months to get it going again. It went by both the names Thunder(the mufflers were worn out)and Dragon Wagon(it trailed grey smoke when accelerating)...

Growing up, my Mom and Dad had a 65 Chevy Belair wagon, They sold it around 71 and bought a 69 Mustang. In 76 they traded the Mustang for a 76 Chevrolet Malibu Classic wagon. They were looking at a Malibu Classic coupe that had the swivel bucket seats, but me and my younger brother fell in love with the 3rd seat in the wagon. They had that car till 81.

My first longroof was a 69 Chevrolet Kingswood, I got it Nov.1st 1997 and keep it till June 05. My friends thought i was nuts, until I cleaned it up and made a nice driver out of it.

79 Fairmont 200 I6 4 on the floor. Paid $75 for it and it was pretty clean. I wondered why it was so cheap till the clutch went out that night. Then a week later 3rd gear went out of it. 4 almost 5 years later I still drove it off and on with only 1st, 2nd and 4th gear. I put that poor old girl through hell and she kept on going and going faithfully. They sure do not make them like that any more.

My Dad had a 1965 Pontiac wagon. It was black for his business and we loved riding in the very back.

My first long-roof wagon was my 89 Crown Vic. My first wagon was my 83 AMC Concord DL wagon/hatchback [R.I.P.].

1981 Volvo 240 DL wagon. Paid $500 for it in '97, my first Volvo. There was an ad that ran in the 70s and 80s for Volvo, something along the lines of "invest now for later".

They were right. I was on my way to one of the subs here in Chicago. There was a two lane road, my lane stopped, and the other lane was moving at 50-55ish. On my right was a gard rail and a local cement company. I looked into my rear view mirror, there was a Mack truck moving pretty good and I had a feeling he was not going to stop. He hit me (his truck was unloaded) at around 50mph. This pushed me into the Ford conversion van in front of me.

The Volvo did its job. The only injury I had, cuts from some flying glass. She had over 200k, rusty body and floor, yet it held up. A few years later, I would be in another accident with a Volvo C70. Lady hit me (she was reading a book) while she came off the expressway. Again, I walked away.

So when people say "Volvo for life", I understand two times over.

Were the 5-spd standard trannies known for that weakness or was it a One-Off thing. Sounds like it would be a good idea to get one rebuilt with new gears.

The first longroof I drove was my dad's '83 Caprice Estate, 9 passenger. He bought it brand new after trading in his '76. It was his '76 that inspired my search and ultimate purchase of the first longroof I've owned, my '75 Caprice Estate. :jumping:
