Rare car, never cared for the name even when new. But they are the late 70's equivalent to a Royal Bobcat, or Yenko Chevy. The $31,000 asking price is actually a pretty good deal for one of these. https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/d/santa-ana-1978-pontiac-trans-am-mecham/6871159227.html
I always thought you could say to the cop who pulled you over for doing the required Burnout the "this in Nacho car man!)
I think it is an equalizer for the Stereo. Those cars could be ordered with just about any performance or any other option available at the time. They ranged from just a few HP more than the stock 220 hp to over 800 hp. This car actually has quite a few options including the stereo and Recaro seats. If they were not so "In your face" and have such a stupid name I would have been interested, And I think the song should be Macho Macho Am, I'm gonna beat you with my Macho Am........
I don't mind the name. It's a product of the time it was built in. It'd be like if an 88 Trans Am had a "Gnarly" edition. It would be corny now, but that's how it goes. Name aside, I like the car. It's definitely a 70's street beast, there's no mistaking that. I dig it.
Whenever I hear the word "Macho" I think of the Village People. Not really great word association. I was once asked in a job interview "are you a Macho Man?" I busted out laughing and replied "Do you mean in the Village People kind of way or the Randy Savage kind of way" which got a laugh out of the interviewer. Turns out he was worried if I would get along with the "ladies" in the office. I'm sure the Navy brass was really amused when the Village People had the hit about being in the Navy too.....
The Village People we’re sued by the YMCA. I guess we can laugh now, but the Navy, YMCA and macho men will never be the same.
