Ok, the east Germans bought them because that's all they were allowed. The body's are made of some pressed trash or leftovers or some such nonsense.

I'm going to buy a wonderful luxurious fuel sipping wonder of engineering instead. Kind of the Cadillac of eastern European technology.

Does anyone have a YUGO for sale????

Trabants were built by Sachsenring, in East Germany, from 1958 to 1991. The older Trabbis have a different style than this one does. They are built of Duraplast, which is a form of fiberglass. They have a 2-cylinder, 2-stroke engine that gets it up to a whopping 100 km/h (61 mph). I nearly bought one to bring home from Germany in 1992! I think these are really neat little cars that exemplify the the grayness and overall dread behind the Iron Curtain back before 1990. It's a piece of history, no doubt! If you can find the last Trabbis from the mid-'90s, they have the 1.3L VW Golf engine, and are supposed to be quite a car! Hell, I even have a "DDR" plate to put one!

    Me...I'd swap in a turbocharged 3.8L Buick V-6!
