Maybe, or they took a license plate off a junked trailer and put it on this one and are using it now.

One big problem is that several states do not require privately-owned utility trailers and such under 10K# GVW to have titles OR registration! Oklahoma and Tennessee are two such states. In OK, you could not even VOLUNTARILY title or tag such a trailer, unless it was a commercial license; which required evidence of it actually being used in a business. That changed in 2008 to where you can get a private trailer tag for $7.50 per year, but still can not get a title for said trailer.

A trailer tag for this trailer is required in ALL of the surrounding states around OK, so the thievin' bastard may well have switched tags, if it is located outside of OK.

Travel trailers must be tagged and titled, regardless of size. I pulled that car hauler trailer through nearly 25 states and had problems in only one state - Nebraska - because of the no-tag thing. It was being pulled by an OK-registered pickup, so the OK rules applied. Took the thick-headed Nebraska state cop a while to process that information, and he ended up not writing me up. After that, I had a written affidavit from the OK Tax Commission (our DMV) stating OK law on this, and never had a problem with this in other states after that.

Here in Arizona, they switched to a permanent registration on all trailers up to a certain size (or Weight). You pay a one-time fee of $75.00, and you get plate, title and registration. Unfortunately, when someone takes it across the border, all you have left is the registration.
We were in Mexico on a cruise and stopped at a port and went sightseeing. I was surprised how many pickups I saw at the beach shops that had long expired California license plates on them. Kinda makes ya wonder, huh?

:banghead3:And I'm from Illinois, now in Florida. As far as I know all trailers of any size needs a title and license plate. Any southern or midwestern state I've been in seems to have a license on even small utility trailers pulling lawn mowers.

I complain about the cost but would rather have a tag and title than not. I've been so worried lately I sleep with my car hauler trailer!

Actually for years even when towing our RV or flat bed I use a small cheap pin lock. Most likely useless but I feel safer.

Sadly it's going to get worse as time goes by. Too many out of work no good thieves needing drug money.

I believe that a license plate has to be mounted the right way. There are many ways to mount the plate, of course: https://www.carid.com/license-plate-brackets/ Some guys have those plastic frames with clip-on license plates. But I do not really trust these. So I have selected the toughest solution. My license plate brackets and mounting require drilling (to me, that is ok, even if I have got two holes in the license plate and two bolts in it). But I sleep calm knowing that the license plate will stay exactly where I bolted it. The same story with my trailer.

I took a 7/16" bolt with a self-locking nut, drilled a hole through the tag and the fender, and cinched it up. Only way that was coming off was with tools.
