looking for some information on just how to attach trim to the gas cap. I managed to find the correct cap (NOS) and was thrilled. It has 4 small holes for attaching a piece of the trim moulding. Does anyone out there know how best to do it. I don't have the piece of trim either and I suspect I would have to fabricate it from a piece of existing trim unless someone knows of another way. Anybody out there ever dealt with this one?
Hello EJ! I'm working on a 1964 fairlane ranch wagon as well. Unfortunately my original gas cap is missing too. Where were you able to get an original cap? In regards to your trim, I wouldn't know where to start. Please keep us updated on your progress maybe with pictures! It may be possible to have a 3D printed plastic piece fabricated and painted from scratch. Do keep in mind, there is a lower level trim for the 64 fairlane, I'll post some pictures of mine when I get home if I remember.
Found the cap on EBay - just dumb luck but NOS in the box. Will be a process to figure out how to mount that piece of trim to the cap.
One way if you're cutting a piece of trim to use is to mount it with a pair of threaded trim clips, once you have the trim on tight then remove any excess stud to prevent interference with the caps operation.
I'll be headed down that road some day. Maybe once it's road worthy. Here's what I have on it right now though.
I've got no idea how the trim piece attaches, but I know the gas cap on a '65 Falcon Futura wagon has a similar trim piece attached to it. Most likely uses the exact same attachment method. There could be a know-it-all over on a Falcon forum. In this pic, you'll see the trim piece includes the 'Fa' of the 'Falcon' name inside the trim area.
It appears from the photo you attached that your trim is wider that the raised "handle" on the cap. Without having your new cap as reference, I am assuming that the trim will go down the middle. Do you think rivets will do the trick?
