Does anyone know how to properly remove an armrest-based (as opposed to door panel-based) power door lock switch? Mine, on the driver's door, only works to unlock the doors; it does not lock (so I have to reach across to the passenger door switch to lock all doors).
I tried popping it out by pushing up from underneath it after removing several screws to the armrest, but to no avail, lest fear of breaking something.
Is this something that should pop off from the top perhaps? I'd like to get a look at the contacts to see if corrosion is the culprit, but am afraid of doing more damage just getting the switch out. Here's a photo:

I believe these have spring-type metal along the edges that snap it into place. You can pry up and get lucky or remove the door panel entirely and reach in from below to assist the metal to deform slightly and remove the switch.

Yeah, you remove the door panel, then remove the blue knob that holds the connector to the switch; once you pry the connector off, there are two spring steel clips. Compress them as you push the switch and escutcheon out of the armrest.

The whole door panel? Not just the arm rest? Okay...thanks guys!

Far as I remember, the armrest doesn't come off. But it's been too long since I worked on one. But I am sure about the switch removal itself, I've done a lot of those.

Well then, that would explain why I couldn't get the armrest off after removing the screws along its bottom edge lol.

Remove the screws in the pocket of the arm rest. Now slide the pad rearward to disengage the clips.

By the way, once you get the armrest pad off, there are additional screws inside the armrest base that hold it to the door.

*slaps forehead* I thought the armrest came off! I just could not remember how.

The Fisher Body Manual explains all of this.

I don't have a library of factory manuals. I haven't worked on a RWD GM car in quite some time; it's why I couldn't remember.

There's also a video on You Tube on how to remove a Caprice armrest pad and door panel.

Ah hah! Sliding the armrest pad rear-ward is the trick I didn't know. I got all of the screws out but was trying to gently lift it straight up...now wonder. Thanks Joe and thanks BlueVista for the video link!

On the suggestion of the Fisher Body manual: I'm having a devil of a time finding one for 1987...weird...never had issues finding them for my '70 or '75.

Did you happen to try typing 1987 fisher body manual into the ebay search box? I got five of them for sale just now.

Yes I did, but perhaps I was a bit too quick to judge them by their cover. They came up showing Cadillac, Buick and Olds; no Chevy (or Pontiac for that matter), so I thought I needed to keep looking.
