When i was working in PA (88,89) we did the paint work and i did the decals for domino's cars they deliver in a 5 mile radius, one of the cars was damaged less than a year and it had 80,000 miles on it ! that's a lot of pies delivered!
Nothing new, a pizza place here had 1970' ish Ford courier trucks with pizza oven back bodies. They would load up the trucks with several different type pizzas and drive all over town waiting for delivery calls on their two-way radios. They'd also stop at gas stations to see if anybody was hungry, who wasn't for pizza? I ate plenty of them, gas fumes make you hungry, typing this make me hungry.
Probably a good idea.... Think about it. You order a pizza to be delivered, and it comes to you, in a box - no warmer oven, and the driver is most likely making 3 or 4 stops before he gets to your house, with your (now cold) pizza. The conversion also allows room for a cooler for sodas, etc, more supplies, etc. It also guarantees that the company is protecting the public and the company in case something happens. We had an incident in Springfield here last week where a driver for the local Straw Hat Pizza was drunk, delivering pizzas, and hit a disabled man in one of those little mobility carts with the delivery vehicle. Fortunately, he was uninjured, but his little cart was damaged. Now, I don't know if in this case a personal vehicle was being used (I suspect it was), and I wonder if their insurance coverage is in order. Unless you tell your insurance company that you are using your personal vehicle for business, there is a possibility they could DENY coverage if something happens while you are on the job.
What's funny is I see a Pizza Hut add at the top. We only have Pizza Hut and a few cheap pizza shops here and none deliver to the boonies. Now I'm hungry!
Hmmmmmm, I remember and even Duck'in'o's link shows a VW bug as a old delivery car. I remember in the 70's pizza joints used VW's, nothing more than a drivers seat inside. A little real enclosed oven warmer not like the new fangled thing to agree with the link "WTF, a open tupper ware container with a glorified heat lamp" so to say, and a plain and simple cooler in the back to keep soda cold for delivery. The VW's around here were used rite up until the end of the 80's, set up the same......... OMG though, the smell from a zillion pizza's...... not a very pleasant smell inside after a million pizza's, more like boiled in parmesan cheese sweaty gym socks. LMAO flash back time, ironically in the late 80's bar hoping we were some what responsible, take a bus town town to get plastered. Last call and out the door we would go, no buss's anymore, cab would cost maybe $6. Had a friend who worked at a pizza joint as the delivery driver, would call from a phone booth a 1/2 block away from the joint and order a small cheese pizza for delivery at around $4..... using my parents address. We would wait in the back until 'Brent' came out who knew exactly what was going on. Cheaper than a cab and have a snack while being delivered home. ...Oh man, the people we would stuff into that VW and ride shot gun for deliveries.......but that you will never get the smell out smell still lingers 25+ years later Today, 2016 I have a really hard time believing some slipshod type fast food cheap and sleazy pizza joint francize owner ( Agree with comment posted in the link) is going to spend $ for this when they can have someone else trash there own personal car at minimum wage rather than giving them a car at there expense to trash. Big $ for a 1 use only car that is going to be very hard to flip, that and the turn around for "I'm gona make $ flipping fast food pizza...... these franchises flip owners left rite up down all around faster than youwould actually believe. Keep in mind there is that 1 in 100 who actually make it work and work to there benefit. Via my work I have personally worked in "No exact pizza joints mentioned by name due to slander" ( saw a employee get his @zz handed to him for BS reason once, kid told his pizza boss..."Mininimum wage, minimum effort, in the kitchen behind the scenes OMG is a understatement in disgust even after being new and opened after just a couple months, and the ones that have lasted for a amount of time ........ almost made me want to go vegan just because of the disgus. Don't be blind, it is happening where you live also......enjoy your pizza Again, been in the kitchens....... want a good pizza? Spend the couple extra $ and order from a pub/family place....not a franchise. Not "ALL" but the smaller neighbor hood/pub style you will get a better product and from a cleaner kitchen............ or just enjoy that welfare pizza made at a franchise where todays profit is what really matters.
Yea Tedy don't be so shy! How'd I miss this? Almost makes me want to cancel that pizza I ordered from Paul's Perfect Pizza and Bait shop! Paul delivers personally in a VW microbus with signs all around saying FREE CANDY FOR LITTLE GIRLS! OMG!
