So I went up to the Texas Hill Country over the holiday week. Took all my kids to Enchanted Rock for hiking, and then surprised my oldest son Eddie with a black 1978 Buick Electra wagon project car for he and I to restore. Father and son wagons! Was so excited!! It was a great time, right up until we went to drive home and a deer used my beloved 1996 Roadmaster wagon to commit suicide. The older members on this group know my car well, and how much I love it. I'm SICK about this. Hit Bambi at 70mph, about 15-miles east of Johnson City. Nobody was hurt, (which is what matters the MOST), and thankfully the airbags didn’t go off, but my I now have TWO Buick station wagon projects at my house. My wife is SO happy… :| Kinda put a damper on my Christmas spirit, but again, at least we are all ok, and I’ll fix my favorite white-whale soon. It WAS a nice holiday other than the drive home. Never a dull moment. Hope ya'll had a great holiday! -Mike
Sorry to hear. Glad no one was hurt. My Custom 56 ElCamino suffered a rear end hit in November and is currently in the shop so I have some idea how you must feel right now.
sorry to hear about your troubles. sorry to hear about bambi but glad you guys are ok. car doesn't look to bad so think off it as a warmup for your other resto project with your son
OUCH! Yikes that must have been scary. Glad to hear your all ok. So I suppose you really do have a father and son project(s) now. Happy repairs.
Mike, I was sorry to see this but glad that no one was hurt. I know you love working on the RMW, and it looks like you're already having luck finding parts. Good luck with the repairs and the father-son project and Happy New Year, Owen
Condolences on the damage, I can relate, I popped a big deer that emerged out of the woods in a group out of no where in our '88 Trooper. Fortunately it was at very low speed(had just crossed an unguarded RR crossing). No sheet metal damage, but grill, one turn signal and a headlight enclosure needed to be replaced. Was fortunate this was a few years ago as Gen 1 Troopers are "truckus unobtanium" in the yards these days it seems!
I saw this on another enthusiast website, from someone who's also a member here. Very sad, but at least the deer didn't go through the windshield (their favorite method of suicide).
In a way it just increases how much you love the car, to love it some more... I nearly hit a deer too, in the Suburban. The dear thing just went "ZIP ZIP" and stopped halfway across the road, not hitting me but going between me and the car behind. Dad never saw it.
Oh DEER! Or oh dear! Glad Donner, Blitson, or Whoever waited until after Christmas. Imagine all the kids that would be mad at the driver of that old station wagon for killing one of Santa's transporters. Now you know how grandpa felt when granma got run over by a reindeer!
Sorry Mike. Around here it is not if, but when... Those not familiar with deer population in Texas hill country should google it. Kerr county for instance. 100,000 deer per square foot or there abouts.
