Saw this bad boy in Melbourne's east last week. Kind of a wagon, couldn't really tell through the drivers window, it looked more like a flat floor, like a van. It had been converted to right hand drive. I waited to try and see the owner, but no joy. Cheers Dave
Yes it is a 1957 BelAir sedan delivery. Actually much like a station wagon with no side windows, usually a hatch lift type rear door, and only a bare floor behind the front seats. These were lite weight utility type vehicles often used by small businesses like grocery stores or florists. With late model rally wheels I'm sure the drive train hs also been updated. Nice car.
Very nice indeed. Now, I'm no expert, but I don't think the Bel Air trim was available on the sedan delivery. Could it be an Aussie only thing? Or did this clever owner install Bel Air specific inserts into the rear fin chrome?
x2 on the trim was added later. The Bel Air trim wasn't available on the '57 sedan delivery anywhere that I know of. They just had a single stainless strip on the quarter and part of the door. They didn't have the black rubber "Dagmars" on the front bumper either. I like the spotlight, keep wondering how a Caprice cop version would look on my car.
I also noticed the sedan delivery in the photo doesn't have "Gills" behind the headlights and appears to have Chevrolet script above the front fender trim just ahead of the door. My guess is that it is a 150 that has had Bel Air trim added. Still cool. I like it.
From my slowly disappearing memory the front "Dagmars" are accesories. The originals were stainless round inserts in the round bumper bars. On a station wagon type vehicle only the Nomad was known as a BelAir, others were a 150 or 210. The '57 BelAir trim is a popular add on. I like it. Even my lowly 210 handyman wagon has '55 Bel-Air side trim now. Only slightly wider than the 210 stainless with the small shark fin added so I could tu-tone the paint. A sedan delivery is basically a station wagon with no side windows or seats behind the front. Maybe an SUV, mini van, flex?
