On a 1981 Malibu, how is the aluminum trim on the rear quarter glass retained?

Clips, very similar to these...........(similar that is, but it should give you a idea of what is under the trim)

For the life of me I can't exactly remember what they really looked like and good old Google and station wagon anything provides jack sqwat, above is a "kinda" example. I popped the trim of my 83 Olds when I got it, same as your Malibu. I only did it to clean under, my clips in the 83 were all metal and I was able to re-use all of them. Getting my 87 full size ready for paint GM cheeped out and used plastic clips witch I broke several.... with almost no effort trying to remove the trim. It is a easy task to remove the trim minus the brittle plastic on the 87. Patience, a gentle hand, that and the correct tools will work and no damage to the trim or your paint/glass. I used plastic trim tools I got at a auto store, that and a screwdriver and baby wonder bar wrapped in duct tape.
