Long time member, but haven't posted for a while. I finally got our 64 Pontiac Tempest Wagon together. I added power lift motor for the tailgate window. The original motor was not available, but I found that a 1990 Suburban motor would work. Unfortunately, it came without the plastic gear/clutch assembly so I had to reuse the 50-year old one. It worked fine for a week, then stripped out. I'm having trouble finding a replacement, even for the '90 'burb. Any suggestions? Thanks! Dave
Google "obsolete GM parts" to find someone who sells NOS parts obtained from dealerships that cleaned out their stocks.
I am not sure how yours is made, but I have repaired many gears where the inside had broken. If the nylon gear is still good, clean it out and remove all the grease. I have filled the hollow section of the nylon gear with Bondo and clamped the smaller drive gear in place over night. You can also drill holes from the back side, screw the insides into the plastic gear and remove most of the screw heads so they will not rub the inside of the housing. This works for Ford and Mopar gears. Not sure about yours.
Dodgeguy. wouldn't it be easier and safer to just put 3 new plastic buttons inside the drive gear? Using screws, nuts, Bondo to lock the gears together could lead to injury, fire, or damage to the motor if the window is obstructed by ice, a 2X4, or a childs head. There are lots of videos on Youtube that explain the procedure.
If you are talking about this style plastic gear and clutch, they are used on Corvettes from 1956-1982. EVERY Corvette repro parts vendor sells them. About $35 each.
