My 63 Fairlane Squire fuel tank sending unit has bit the dust, anybody know of replacements? sedans and coupes are different, thinking about cutting off rheostat and box off one off those and welding on my old pipe, that should be fun.
How did you determine the sending unit is bad? On my wagon I thought the same and when I pulled the sending unit the gasoline of today had ate the float . Todays gas is very acidic
For years with several cars I've written down the odometer reading and filled my gas tank after I drove 300 miles. This is the cheapest and easiest way. First I'd clean the old unit. Second I'd replace the float. Third I'd remove it from the gas tank before welding. Forth I'd go on-line and check Rock Auto for a replacement. Fifth I'd test the dash guage to make sure it's working.
Pulled unit out and little wire on rheostat is broken in two places, Looked at Rockauto, every thing expect wagon. Thought while it was out I'd mess with it awhile. then just fill up every 100 miles or so,
Could possibly buy one for a sedan and change the arm length. Even the new sedan sender are referred to as yellow wire sender is not really accurate. There is a George and Nancy at 406-543-2591 that may be able to help you. This info I got from the Fairlane Club of America which is a great source of info on these Fairlanes.
Being a Mopar guy I'm not sure where the fuel cell in the Fairlane's is located but I'd guess they would be in the left or right quarter because of the foot or spare tire well(all the Mopars are and have been like for ever. If so, do as us Mopar guys are forced to do. Find a NEW or RE-POP sending unit at or about the same year and customize it. The sending unit will be the same in diameter, lines, and connectors so all you have to do is modify the float arm to match the length and drop of your original by splicing in a piece of rod to duplicate the length, then bend as needed with the new sending unit. Clean 'um both with some 240 grit, wrap the splice or the splices with an inch of thin copper wire, flux it and using silver solder make 'um one. See how easy that waz-iz? Jer
Good luck. I've replaced the 55 Chevy wagon sender several times over the years. Still not accurate. I've even bent the arm every possible way. Now I have no idea which way is right! I just get gas often.
