Hi all, I finally joined after years of lurking. Although I started out in first gen Mustangs then segued to an excop '81 Fairmont, I bought my first wagon around 2000. It was a '78 Fairmont wagon. Today it suffers from terminal rust and will be dismantled for the other Fox chassis projects and her replacement is an '82 Cougar wagon of all things. http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthr...ther-Cougar-Wagon-Rebuild-Already-in-Progress This is my destruction thread for the Cougar wagon. It was supposed to be a simple smog legal 5.0L SEFI conversion but some stuff came up and then I started to dismantle the car to stomp out the rust and then project creep happened and it all got out of hand. Currently work has been suspended so I may gain some experience with rust repair on an '84 Notch: http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?65170-My-Poor-84-Under-Construction-or-Destruction And if you don't think I already have enough to do, I'm on a hunt for a '60s car to replace the Notch when it's done along with a bunch of other Fairmonts I don't think I should continue with. I'd like a first gen A body Chevelle or Tempest but a '68/'69 Firebird would be cool. The prices are scaring me away so I may settle for asking dad about the ol' '65 Galaxie Class Ranch Wagon he has in his field and getting it back on the road. This was our family wagon which he and mom bought new in late '65. The only option he wanted was the overdrive transmission but mom insisted on a V8 - so it has a 289 with the three on the tree and Borg-Warner overdrive. He almost rejected the car when it arrived at the dealership because it came equipped with back up lights and he didn't order them. The dealer threw them in for free. Dad was great at getting the best deals. Anyway, sorry for the long intro but I've enjoyed popping in and reading about various wagons and heard about this forum from Tbirdsps when he had a Cougar wagon. I hope I can add some knowledge to the group although I've already have automotive ADD. Dean T
Welcome aboard motorhead! Always room for more. But keep it pithy please. And, we like pictures, so always post a picture of a wagon... or a girl. Dogs.... not so much.
to the forum. Whether you know it or not you may not even be noticed here. This place is already filled with insane members. However a few of us sane and smart enough seem to keep things on the right track. Nice intro. That and lots of pretty pictures keeps us happy. The love of old cars and station wagons is not a disease, it's a gift.
Don't listen to Jairus. If the dog is the furry 4 legged kind and not the wife or the girl friend, then pictures of the dog are welcome too.
Welcome to the wagon madhouse, Dean. You'll fit right in. That '82 Cougar will make a great base for what you want done. Supposed to be surprisingly easy to drop in the Mustang components. Only semi-tough part is swapping the crossmember, from what I've heard. Believe it or not, we've already had one '82 Cougar wagon owner, tbirdsps (Steve), who lives up in Ridgecrest. He passed it on to another owner some time ago, though. There are a number of fox body wagon experts here, among them are Handy Andy and Stormin' Norman , who both hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Here's tbirdsps's former wagon: Here's Norman's Fairmont: http://stationwagonforums.com/forums/garage_vehicle.php?do=view_vehicle&id=152 And Handy Andy's gallery: Glad to have you here! Marshall
Okay, this went in all different directions - lol. Thanks all for the welcome. Here are some pics I have of the wagon when I picked her up: Here is her current status. She has rust in some rather unusual places. Don't let anyone convince you all cars from Southern Cal are rust free; they just sometimes rust in other locations. Right now work on her is on hold while I deal with an '84 Notch Mustang with roof rot. Stupid sunroof...
