Also, each one of those accidents was preventable, with just some common sense.

No doubt. And they may relate to towing capacity in that the Ranchero was probably a half ton which means it has 1000 lbs to much in the bed as 250 gallons weighs over 2000lbs. The guy that built a trailer too was probably over weigh with over 4000lbs. But first and foremost it wasn't so much the weight of the load but the shifting of the load, which calls to the securing of ones load.

When I drove an 18 wheeler I pulled a tanker very few times. Even though the trailers had baffles I could feel the liquid shifting. I hated it!
Our daughter's husband often hauls water to their home in the back of his 3/4 ton pickup in what appears to be a 500 gal. white tank. I worry about that even. They knew they were buying in a low well water zone but still built there.
Sorry about the remarks on your hitch Stickman. Even zooming in the second cross bar appears to be just a thin metal piece looking just like some of the spare tire carriers I removed under trucks and my old panel truck. I was going by it and the 2" square reciever that went down to maybe 1 1/2" with those small support rods.
I couldn't get the photos to come up but the reciever hitches I have used are like the following and I trust them more.
    Class IV Trailer Hitch Receivers:

    • Designed for trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles
    • 2" x 2" receiver hitch opening
    • Rated up to 12,000 lbs GTW and 1,000 TW
    • Allows for even more gear to be carried or towed
    • Works with all Class III and IV accessories
      • Class I and Class II (1-1/4") hitch accessories can also be used with an adapter
    • Ball mounts are sold separately.
    • Will work with hitch balls with 1" diameter shank

Thanks all for info! I'm pretty well versed on hitches, proper loads etc.(I was a truck driver for years),just looking at a period correct 1984 camper to pull behind the waygone and HATE seeing people overload/improperly load trailers and drive like they're qualifying for NASCAR! I live in northern Michigan and see people headed"up north" or back home every weekend doing this stupid stuff. I probably see at least 100 accidents a year all because of poor towing/loading/drving skills with a trailer. UGH!!!!!
The waygone has a bumper style hitch right now, which WILL be coming off and replaced with a proper classIIIorIV!

We're getting closer and closer to knowing each other, T1..........I still want to call you CAT.........but I'll get over it. I used to live in Peoria, Il...........that's deep in the heart of CAT country.

We've totally hijacked this thread........I lived 3 doors from the Bradley campus, until they bought and leveled all the buildings for a parking lot in the 70's. Then, I moved up on to University Blvd, north of the Interstate..........then got transferred to Chicago......

    :nohijacking:Not me! Never. No way!
Spent many evenings in Bradley Park with my sweetheart. Didn't need a trailer hitch because trailers were illegal in the park. However I did pull our RV out interstate I-74 using at least a class III hitch and sway control.

I'll bet you cruised the nearby Steak-N-Shake.
When you moved to Chicago what kind of trailer hitch did you use? ;)

I believe it was there in Peoria last summer. I am not sure because I had a class IV hitch on my truck and couldn't stop.
Police used to ticket kids for cruising thru more than once looking for a parking space. Seems odd because that's the only way you could park and get waited on.
First time in years we didn't go back to torment our kids.
Speaking of food do you remember Gills in Hanna City out 116? Great fried chicken.

We are going camping this weekend. I went over to the folks place this evening and couldn't help but stage a photo op with the Wagon and the trailer.
