well,i'm gonna do about 400 miles the next 2 days.Just did an oilchange and another round of marvel mystery oil. If that doesn't cure those 2 lifters my buddy just gave me a stock cam and lifters out of a 11000 mile motor,so i'll be throwin those in on thursday/friday. Madcap road trip starts in 17 days!!!!!
Just for sh**'s and giggles...... can you provide a decent pic of your engine?..before you go to rebuild extremes? I also thought you has done your madcap road trip???, or is this another one??? http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32352
Fat Tedy, haven't done the madcap roadtrip yet,Hoping to do Woodward dream cruise, then leave the following thursday(aug 21) for rochester NY,then to Ohio to pick up a tailgate from Alienwagon, then my gal and i r gonna wing it for a day or two.I will try to get some engine pics up also
Are you sure its a 307? I had a 85 cutlass with a 307 and had a lifter noise.Pulled the intake and found it had hydraulic rollers in it. FYI.

Just reread this post. If you did use a stock used cam and lifters from another engine did you also put the lifters in the same holes as they were in on the other engine? Seems like you are just going from one bad choice to another. Also did you ever verify that you have a 305 instead of a 307? You need a new cam, lifters, cam bearings, and a good working carburator. I'd also check the push rods and rockers. Again the question was WHAT CAM. I used an RV cam and am satisfied in my 305 Chevy. Also an Edelbrock 600 with electric choke. Tried Holleys. Get terrible fuel mileage and need constant adjustment.
the motor IS A 305 CHEVY. 100% certain on that now.ended up with a brand new stock cam and mellings lifters. 90% sure it's bad cam bearings. Figure rather than just pulling the motor for cam bearings a 350 should go back in,with a mild cam and edelbrock carb for sure. Never had any luck with holley carbs myself ,and they are 2 light to be good boat anchors!
By the time you replaced the cam bearings, cam, lifters, carb, etc. you'd have as much in that 305 as you will the good 350. Maybe find an old Holley to put on the 305 and together it will make a decent boat anchor.
