Agreed CatmodelT. 1984 saw gm use a "special" electronic 4 barrel carb,no vacuum advance on the distributer and ALL the smog goodies. As for changing heads,i work 16 hours a day and drive 3.5 roundtrip every day till thursday, when i plan on leaving at 0700.I plan on hauling a camper, flatbed trailer and boats,so i think bang for the buck a 350 is my better guess.I've got a chance to pick up a fresh(less than 10000 mile) rebuil with a new edelbrock intake, carb and mild cam for $600 right now. A new carb and intake alone i'm almost there so.....also,didn't do cam bearings i found out this am......so happy with the guy i paid to work on it!
Wow, considering an Edelbrock carb and intake is over half that it's a great buy and a good choice in the long run. Plenty of time to go cruising later.
yeo, that's my thoughts.Depending on the weather i may run back up to rochester NY to pick the kid up for turkey day in it.....
Actually the carb(electronic) has either 1 or 2 plugs on it. they are a hunk of crap. a regular non electric 4bbl(or 2bbl) and a normal HEI with vaccum advance makes a WORLD of difference. Mind you along with eliminating a lot of vac lines that odds are do not work anyway. A lot of the full size cars w/ 4bbl had the HO 305's in them. And in fact are rated at more Horsepower than a mid 70's 350.
Need some input about output! Well we've put a lot into putting out a lot about this topic. Hopefully a 350 engine will soon be put into the wagon and put out enough horsepower to be able to put in many years of fun driving.
Oh come on now, so you only have 4.5 hours every 24 hours to eat, sleep, work on the car, post here, and go back to work the next day?! red bull may give you wings but physically impossible.
DAMN THE TORPEDOS!!!!!!FULL SPEED AHEAD!!!ME AND THE WAYGONE(BETTY MY GIRL NAMED HER) ARE NY BOUND IN HRS!!!!!!!!!YEAH BABY!!!!!
That's it? No update on the engine or carburator? What about the clicking engine and other nonworking things? NY is a long ways to travel in any vehicle that's been giving you problems. Good luck.
Definitely the 350, and if you have a choice, the Buick 350 has the most torque for towing. Be prepared, though, for the 200R4 to need a rebuild in the near future if it has not already been done. It was marginal in the car, without towing, at the best of times. With the bigger engine, and with a trailer, it will almost certainly give up the ghost.
Why do so many think the 200R4 is not a good tranny? Buick used them in their hi performance cars and many are still on the road in other vehicles. I've heard of more problems with the larger 7004R. Even right here on this forum. The 200R4 has a lower low range and higher overdrive. It's smaller in size therefore fits where a 350 auto was by simply moving the rear tranny mount back a few inches. Add a good aftermarket tranny cooler and don't use the radiator cooler. If doing an engine swap, why not use the 200R4 as long as it still works? Then later swap if you think a 7004R is better.
Denny, I was saying that the 200R4 can be rebuilt into a GREAT transmission. Just in factory guise, it sucks! The one in my 84 Delta 88 was rebuilt 3 times in 18 months. On a brand new car, and all under warranty. The one in my brother's 86 Pontiac Parisienne Safari needed doing at only 300,000 kms, all highway, and yes, both had external coolers fitted. The version behind a factory 305 is not going to last a long time behind a 350. There is too much torque, and towing only makes that situation worse.
Mike I understand. The 200R4 I bought at a swap meet was rebuilt and supposedly modified, whatever that means. Even came with a new torque converter. Has a brass rebuild tag attached. Story was the owner had an El Camino and decided to put a 454 in it so feared the 200R4 wouldn't hold up. I had a sick powerglide in my wagon when I bought it back so figured the 200R4 was at least an improvment. It's worked out very well but I drive like a grandpa and don't get on it. Don't remember what I paid but with new torque converter was well under $500. Probably more like $250-$300. I owned it a long time before even using it. In fact that part had us worried.
Well, the WAYGONE didn't make it. About an hour from the house it started running really bad and the carb caught fire. Ended up with the soccer mom mini van. So i'm gonna find a motor(350) and keep the 2004R. I've got a buddy that builds them and runs them in his 9sec malibu all day
Sorry about the carburator fire. Those can be dangerous. runs them in his 9sec malibu all day Yea but he only does that once or twice a day. If you'd only driven the WAYGONE 9 seconds you wouldn't have had the carb fire.
i agree with the 9 second thing, but his trans has well over 1000 passes behind a street driven beast motor in a 1964 buick(ie:boat). of course i just found a totalled suburban,46000 miles,LS motor(6.0) and a 4le60 trans.HMMMMM.......................now to find that bucket of money i left around here somewhere................
