Joplin, MO, to be exact. Down in the southwest corner of the state. Right on old Rt 66. Anyone else on here from this area?? Age 65. Married. Work on office staff of an insurance agency. For fun and small remuneration, play music a couple nights a week in a local club (bass guitar & harmonica).....we do old rock and old country. Guess that fits with a couple old guys. I will confess up front, I don't own a station wagon. My car is a 1947 Plymouth convertible, owned since 1973. I usully hang out on the P15-D24 forum for Mopars from the 30s to the 50s....if you have any interest in those sort of cars, feel free to at least go over and lurk. A pretty active place with many nice guys. But, I didn't come over here to promote that. Eventually I'll get to my question. I have actually owned a wagon.....a 1954 Plymouth, back in the 70s. Was pretty nice at the time and even had factory overdrive. Eventually sold it.....to a guy near Diamond, MO who parked it under a carport sorta thing, where it sat for at least 25 years. He had removed the motor to rebuild it, but don't know if he ever got a "round tuit". He eventually sold the car to a fellow at Diamond who deals in old cars and parts. He in turn sold the wagon to someone up towards Kansas City, MO. Will be interesting to see if it ever appears again. It wasn't beyond restoration, but I just didn't have enough play money to do all that was needed. Back in 1960 or 61, my parents bought a nice 57 Plymouth wagon -- gold with cream top and side trim......which I eventually wrecked. So, I've been around a couple wagons at least. Now, for my reason to visit here......on the P15 forum a member posted a link to a craigslist ad for a 1953 Dodge woody wagon. My studied opinion (yeah, right) is they never made this car. So I thought I'd ask experts. I figure it's a "phantom" woody, made by someone who could have been a good woodworker. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or info on the car. Link to the ad..... http://atlanta.craigslist.org/cto/1232861500.html
Hi and . I googled for the car and found what apears to be the same woody as in your link but the page wouldnt open. Maybe(?) some one with a ebay acount could ask this seller if there is mention of a woody option. It shows a 2 door wagon, but with out wood. Nice looking wagon though. Thanx for posting it http://cgi.ebay.com.my/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280225123217 Nice Plymouth you have, don't be a stranger!
This is the wagon in the ebay ad..... Far as I know, they were all metal after 1950.....so that's why I question a 53 model woody. Just thought someone here might have previously seen the woody wagon that's for sale n Marietta, GA.
I'm not sure, but the last Ford Woodie was a 1950 or 1951. This isn't really related to your question, but it might help you find more anecdotal proof about when they stopped. Buicks went to 1953 with real wood trim on the outside: http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/h/hercules/hercules.htm This is the main Woodie Index: http://www.coachbuilt.com/woo/index.htm From the bottom of this page: http://www.coachbuilt.com/ From what I can tell, the lead designer at Chrysler, back then in the early 50's was K.T. Keller. You might Google or use Bing.com to get some other sites: http://www.imperialclub.com/Yr/index.htm But these guys might give you a quicker answer: http://www.californiacruisers.com/wood_on_wheels.htm
A very skilled craftsman. Never happened unless it was some kind of one off from the factory but I doubt it.
I'm not an expert but I'll be 70 in a couple of weeks so I was around when those cars were new. Some of my buddies drove them in high school. I never saw a 1953 woody wagon. My dad owned a garage and I never saw one come in there.
I Googled 1953 Dodge woody and this is one thing that came up. I wonder if they still made them in '53. They said this is a 49 Suburban.....so maybe they carried on til 53 or 54. I noticed my last post was in 2009.....so, it's been a while......
hi from a little further south than you missouri.... i know a very little about early mopars and less about woodys.... i have a couple of old plymouth 2dr. wagons and neither are woodys.. i have a early 50s savoy 2dr wagon that should of been a woody.. ha ha ha
Welcome back, Bob. That Dodge woodie you posted yesterday was actually built on one of their truck chassis'. Sort of like a Dodge version of a Chevy Suburban. I believe it was an independent shop that made them. Seen one two at shows in SoCal. I'm sure there are people here who have more info on them. As to your original question, we don't have access to the original ad anymore, so I don't know what that wagon looks like. Here's a link to a page showing a '53 Dodge brochure though.... http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/dodge/53d/53d.html Thanks for returning! Marshall
