Hello gang, I recognize a few of the names here. Name is Scott, I live in Findley Lake, NY. 35 father of 4 and really needed a vehicle to haul the family. SUV's are not my thing and Mini Vans are for Soccer Moms. I needed me a manly vehicle, one that says I am proud to be a father and a man, so I started my hunt and found a clean ex-Florida resident '92 Roadie not more then 20 miles away on Craigslist. Went and looked her over and struck a deal. I couldnt be happier then I am right now, with my Roadie.
Thanks Stormin. I found me a pretty clean 86 Caprice Wagon close by. Its a San Fransisco car that was brough way out east here on the back of a car carrier. Long story short, highschool buddy of my dad has the car. His son went out to Cali, met some tramp, got her knocked up and married her, brought her back when she was 8 months pregnant and she couldnt/wouldnt drive the car back, so it was put on a carrier and transported out. Right after they got out here, she had the kid and went right into sleeping around and broke it off with the son. She needed money and the father loaned her money with the car as collateral, so it was signed over to him and he kept the car till it was paid off, she defaulted and he wants it gone. Its a White Boxy with a gutless 307 olds and 200-4R tranny. Has brand new Cooper Cobra 275/60-15s on the back and brand new 235/60's on the fron, wrapped around Chrome aftermarket chevy rallys with dished center caps instead of the tophats. They are starting to surface rust from sitting. His other son drove it for a month r so and hit a deer, cracking the grille and header pannel, and denting the pass fender and both pass doors. I can snag her with her original 69,000 miles for $400. Very soon she will be parked beside the Roadie and be the wark car and play toy. Lookin for a 350 or 455 for it as I type this. I might even step it up to a SBC and a 700R4 tranny combo if I can find a good priced setup. I see you have a 79 Fairmont. That was my 2nd car, a $75 silver 79 Fairmont, 200 I6 with a 4 speed, I whooped the tar out of that poor car and ended up keepin it for 5 years as a good backup and winter beater. Couple months after I got it, I took 3rd gear out of it, but I just kept goin, wind the piss out of it in 2nd and hit 4th, lol. She had almost 300,000 on her when I sold her to my neighbor who wanted the motor for his 78 Zephar Coupe and he drove that motor for another 4 years untill the car wouldnt pass inspection anymore.
Hey...what color is that '92??? Go with the Olds 455 (bolts up, Chevy doesn't) ship load more torque and KEEP the 200-4R. I build these all the time. Only, I do Buicks. Well....sometimes Olds too.
Thanks for the welcome guys. Tom, I am not positive, Im thinking Saphire Blue maybe? Maybe not, its a dark blue, like Navy, but I am not keen on the "GM" specific code or name they used for it. I will be finding out for sure soon, I will be repainting the top of the front bumper, hoof and roof, where the Florida sun took a beating to it and took the clear off and some of the color off the rear corners of the hood. I will go with whatever I can find thats running and in my price range. I think I might have availabilty to a 403 olds thats in a 79 or 80 Trans Am thats been wrecked. I really wouldnt care if its a Buick, Pontiac, Chevy or Caddy motor. Anything but the God awful 307. I have had several of those in my days and they are only good for boat anchors
Who's Tom? Hey...save yourself grief and go with the Olds 455. If you are going to build it up or beat it hard...keep in mind that the 403 has window pane mains and thin walls. You can make 'em go but the really hot ones use a girdle. You can buy a used 455 from $100 up. Just rebuilt stock it will pull like crazy with that BB torque. Nice '92 RM!
welcome i bought a '96 roadie about a month ago i love it lots of room for 2 kids and 4 dogs or parts hauler for the faimont project.
You should visit the http://www.fordsix.com forum to see what people are doing with those little sixes. I swear mine has more guts than the original 302 V8 I had in it. One punchy little motor, and it was one rebuilt to stock tolerances by my favourite Ford dealer up here, about 6 months before I bought the donor car to restore my wagon. Last of the honest ones, really. HandyAndy's doing up a new 6 for his Monty wagon, with a better head and some really fine engine machining. That thing will send a few rice-rocket owners to their chiropractor (as long as Andy stays away from the speed cameras.)
Welcome to the forums! Congrats on the Roadie. I know that the 307 Olds in that Caprice don't got a lotta oomph, but I will tell you they are great in the snow with that 200R4, very torky! Both would be great cars, and I'm sure would look great side by side in the driveway!
