I wouldn't necessarily call it 'rare', although I'm sure there were more 'non-wood' Caprices from '91-'96 than there were 'Estates'. Quite the reverse for the Buick Roadmasters. And the '91/'92 Custom Cruisers, wood wasn't even available due to their lower accent color being standard.
Hmm... I had always wondered why the wood-grain was no available on the Custom Cruisers. Now I still wonder why Pontiac never had their version of this wagon. I guess Pontiac wagon sales had slumped in the late 80s, that the decided to phase it out. If I remember correctly, they didnt even have a big wagon in 1990 and cut it out even before the boxy wagon design ended for the other three makes. Mine was probably one of the last ones made. My 1989 Safari was made in January of 1989 if I recall.
If I remember correctly, woodgrain was standard on the Roadmaster (wood delete was available as an option), but an extra cost option for the Caprice from '92 - '96 (N/A in '91). Between my wife and me, we've seen at least a couple of '91/'92 Custom Cruisers with woodgrain. We assumed this was added by the dealer as it was the darker colored wood as on the '90 and earlier CCs, rather than the light wood used on the '91 - '96 Roadmaster and Caprice.
Yeah, it was nothing like it was in the 60s-70s with the GM wagons. Wood-grain was optional on all of the wagons except the 1966-1976 Chevy Caprice wagon on which it was standard, but you could not get it on the Impala and lesser trim model Chevy wagons. I have yet to see a 91-92 Custom Cruiser with wood-grain, but would like to see it. I rarely even see ANY 91-92 Custom Cruisers these days.
If you see 'wood' on any '91/'92 Custom Cruiser, it was either added by a dealer or by an owner - absolutely not available from the factory.
Well, there is one............. It's a '95 Pontiac Parisienne Safari (at least according to the nameplates) Here's the build thread, over on the GM Longroof forum: http://gmlongroof.4umer.com/t7903-the-2013-thread-on-my-95-parisienne-wagon
Very nice car. I got the opportunity to see it at the ISWC Convention/Show in Ft. Wayne this past June. Pontiac should have made this.
Wow, that is cool, thanks! I looked at all of the pics over there. That was a lot of work, but a good replica of what a Pontiac wagon may have looked like in that body style. I joined that site btw. He even did the design in the taillights and changed the wheels at some point. I like the Pontiac rally wheels with white walls better I think...
