Another thing I very much like about your '73 is that it is a 6-passenger model, and has a beautiful full-width back seat!

I know most clamshell wagon lovers want the third row, but it is one of my least favorite options for these. Give me a normal, usable back seat and the cargo trunk in the back any day! :2_thumbs_up_-_anima

Stick with the 73, and fix the bit of rust that is there. Because it is all below the bottom trim on the wood grain, if you have a good shop do the paint, nobody will be able to guess that just the lower portion has been touched. What I would do, though, is extend the exhaust just a little further out. The rust on the bottom of that quarter looks like it is from the heat of the exhaust gases melting things, allowing the rust to start. The dog legs always rust because of the shape of the lip at the bottom. It catches dirt and holds it against the bodywork.

When it comes to the rust under the quarter window trim, I have found a way around that. I do this with all the trim on a car that has not started to rust yet, and certainly when I do repair any that has started. I prime with a rust inhibiting primer, then spray on the clear rubber stone guard. I mark the outline of the trim with a pencil and mask off, so it is hidden. If there are clips that go on studs, I pop them on before the stone guard sets so it does not chip off, exposing bare metal. The stone guard also forms a barrier that prevents a galvanic reaction between dissimilar metals, so you don't get rust forming where the trim meets the body. I did that to the first 79 Thunderbird I had, and 20 Ontario winters later, there was not one speck of rust around any of the trim.

my olds was from vegas and poncho from NC both were rust free and those who had em before me did nothing with them(bad idea) when they brought them back and drove them
. I when I got them pulled all door panels and such and oiled the slop out of them. they both rotted from the inside out in 3-4 years even oiled( salt had already Gotten in there). This one I have now was oiled before I got it and I oil it every year also.

I love he third seat option. But realistically it is not comfortable and storage sucks.

For me the third row has novelty value and is also one of my least favourite options but for others it seems to be a deal breaker, I am not sure why:huh: but are some people actually planning to haul around the Brady bunch as well as Alice after buying one with the third seat option these days?:D

It also seems that because the third row is so desirable, then this has also inflated the price for a clean clamshell as well. For me A/C and full power gate is a must and of course I too would love a fully loaded everything included a BB mind you, so if the third seat was included as well then great. The 9 seater discussion seems to come up a lot when 70's wagons are brought up.

Looking like you are loving your 73 hey Swanny :thumbs2:

Yeah, it grows on me more everyday. Going to get it licensed next week and drive it around some. Our local car show is the 17th and after that I will take a couple weeks and fix the lower section under the woodgrain. My brother might get to fixing the lower section later his week. We don't have the Camaro close enough to take it to him yet.

Well no one loves the 3rd seat option in wagons more than I do (just because of the coolness and meaning it is one more option), but its a '73 Caprice Estate, its awesome no matter! I would not let the lack of a 3rd seat stop me from getting a cool wagon. When I agreed to purchase my '72 Caprice Estate I had no idea what options it had. I was seeking a 3-seat wagon though. I didn't even know if it had the 3rd seat. When I asked the old lady if it had the 3rd seat and she said yes, that was just icing on the cake... when I seen it had tilt wheel (another option I was seeking), that was more icing on the cake. lol. I pretty much figured it had A/C, most southern cars around here even back then had A/C.

My 73 Ford Wagon does not have a 3rd seat in it,and I really like the extra storage space underneath the cargo floor. My Roadmaster and Custom Cruiser do have the 3rd seat option.

Did you get your new car home yet? You said you bought it, just wondering how it went.

Gotta have the 3rd row seat. We've got 4 kids. They love riding in the back.

Congrats on your new Caprice. The color is my favorite. Can you recommend a transporter that is reasonable? I'm close to closing the deal on a 63 Buick Special wagon that is located in Pennsylvania and the quotes I'm getting seem unreasonable to me. I'm just getting too old to go get the car myself.
