I get the feeling this is not a Ford-built conversion. If it were, they would have used the wagon lights, not the standard 2-door lights. I'd love to know how much of a tail gate you get with this one, or if the lights are part of the tailgate! If so, good luck driving with the tail gate down to accommodate long loads! It is interesting, that's for sure.

If you look closely the whole rear area lays down. I remember these when they were new. They were sold thru the Ford dealers.(y)

Never new they were sold at Ford dealerships.

These have been posted before, I also agree the wagon tail lites should have been used with a proper tail gate. If I remember, the first time we saw one of these it came with pics or documentation ...who ever's company made it had a disclaimer of some sort that ...yada,yada, tail gate must be closed because of no tail lites while driving, yada, yada.

These things started out as Futura coupes. As coupes, the roofline looked rather strange. Cutting the rear roof section off to make a pickup vastly improved the appearance. Since the Futura's tail lights were retained, and since the creation of the pickup box and rear glass area were the only body modifications, exterior bodywork was kept to a minimum, so most (except the bed and tailgate) of the exterior paint was applied at the factory before the conversion. Last year one of these Durangos attended our local cruise in on occasion. They do make a good looking pickup.

Maybe it's just me, but I think that car would look a ton better with an 83-86 LTD front end on it.

There is one of these in Gainesville. I've seen it parked out in front of a business on US 441 on the north side of town. I did a double take the first time I saw it thinking it was an El Camino.

There used to be 3 of them sitting in a lot in the Denver area a few years ago, when I lived there. I've never understood the car-truck thing. Not my cup of tea.

I remember seeing these at the LA Auto Show when they first came out. Usually, with these 'conversions', there's always some cost consideration that shortchanges the effectiveness of the whole package. I thought the Durango was very well done, including the engineering for the tailgate. Also, as I recall, it's wasn't all that expensive over the cost of the coupe on which it was based - maybe a couple grand.

I think the car-truck thing is actually pretty practical. El Caminos and Rancheros are great for people who prefer to drive a car, but need the open bed of a pickup truck.

    Its alot more practical than...
