Just got this Gilmer belt kit off Ebay. It looks pretty good. Belt runs on the W/P, Alt and the crank. The P/S is run off a "V" belt groove machined into the crank pulley. Whatta y'all think? All for under $100.00 bucks. Dave.
I hate to be the bad guy but I tried this on my 302 I had in my Torino and it did not work! You have to have the bet track exactly or it will come off the front or tear itself up on the alt. I couldn't get my Alt perfectly straight and threw the belt on the first drive around the appt. That put a kink in it and well yeah it was junk. Then I tried local stores to get a replacement belt and ended up with one from NAPA that had the wrong tooth spacing so I ended up ordering 2 replacement belts. I put the next one on after re-adjusting the Alt bracketry and it started shredding it on the alternator. No matter what I did it would not track correctly and I quit and moved on back to the March V belt setup I had bought off Craigslist for $50 but even that I had to spend another $90 on a March 2 groove lower since I had power steering. Oh and If you need to run the PS I ran it off the rear groove behind the teeth of that Gilmer. This I just my experience so all I can say is Good Luck. Oh here is a better pic of what it looks like too.....
Well, I found both the good and the bad of this kit. Good=It tracks fine. Bad=I have to make a spacer for the crank pulley to line up with the power steering pulley. Good=It looks way cool. Bad=The bolt holes on the crank pulley are too close to the sides and require special small headed bolts. Good=I doubt I'll ever have a slipping belt again. Bad=I had better order an extra belt or two in case I break one. Like everything on this build, it is going to be an exercise in shadetree mechanic ingenuity. I love it!! Dave.
Dave one question. You state it tracks fine however how long and how high of an rpm did you run it for? What happened on mine is that over a certain rpm (over 2500) my alt would actually move and the belt would rub the front of the alt. If you ran it around the block or revved it up a bit then awesome, but if you just idled it for a while then you have yet to test it. I hope it works for you and I wish it did for mine as I loved it too! I had to space my PS pump out to line up and also had the same issue on the bolts and also the holes not lining up in the crank pulley so I had to drill mine a bit. Jesse
Thus far everything has been in the shop but it has been over a fair range of RPM. I held it above 2500 for a few minutes and kept an eye on it. I saw no movement whatso ever and it looks like my alignment is spot on. Lets see how it is once I put in the spacer for the crank pulley. I have high hopes so far and I can always go back to my "V" belts if I have to. Dave.
I still need a 1/2 in. spacer for the crank pulley and since mine is a 3 bolt item, I'm not having too much luck. I don't suppose you have any ideas where I might get one? Do you? I can machine one at my friends auto parts store if I have to but I'd like to see if there are some to be bought somewhere? Dave.
All I can find is this one but its a 4 bolt. I would take this and drill your 3 hole pattern in it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/0-950-Bille...er-SBF-302-351W-351C-Crankshaft-/110986417303
$28.00? Wow, such a deal. Where was that spacer when I needed something like that? You DO KNOW that the guyz in the Machine Shops won't even turn the power to those Computerized Bridgeports 'less you grease 'um with ah couple hundred don'tcha
My buddy George made this for me in about an hour and didn't charge me a thing so I am already ahead of the game. Especially since I couldn't find a three bolt spacer online anyways. I swear that George guy is a keeper.
