Has anyone had to replace the gas tank on a Falcon station wagon ? I've got a 1965 model and they don't seem to make any replacements. The closest thing I've found has the filler hole in the wrong spot, and to make things worse I've had to turn it upside down to get this far. This also makes the fuel sending unit up-side down too and make my gas guage read backwards.. full=E empty=F. Is there any solution to this nightmare?

    Hey Joe,

I think this is a problem for many of the wagon owners. They just don't make replacement tanks, so you are probably stuck either having your old tank repaired, or you'll need to find a good, used, replacement tank. If you don't have a master parts catalog, find someone who does and see what vehicles share a tank with yours. Possibly from a similar year, or maybe a Ranchero of similar year, but the MPC should be able to answer that question for you.

For what its worth, on my '67 Merc wagon, knowing how hard it is to find parts, I have made a point to purchase some things to have "just in case." One item is a spare gas tank that needs some clean up, but should be functional. I also have spare tail light lenses and a full set of glass since I don't want to have to be down for months while I try to find a good replacement.

    Good luck!

Wish I had a eazy answer, but as mentioned gas tanks and sending units for wagons is a bugger.

Its worth at least a email, try these these guys......Maybe they can help, or at least give you some leads. They had a NOS tank sending unit for my 72 Merc.

As for the Tank you have now....

You mention the filler tube is wrong.......can you still fuil the car with little hastle? Can it, with the tank removed/cleaned be modified?....Tanks get welded up, custom filler tube made?

Again, with the tank you have removed and cleaned can you and or do you have room in the tank to flip the sending unit over? Again, because of the tabs on the sending unit, you may have to change there location or modify the gas tanks hole.

Just a couple of thoughts, I personally know what it's like finding parts that almost don't exist:wave:

    Falcon gas tank

well.... I'm not really happy with my present gas tank, but as long as you put the gas in slow and remember the reading is backwards, I guess it will do til I sell it. I did have to custom make all the connections to route the filler hole to the gas tank. The old one had the same trouble... up-side down, so not worth repairing. But the car made it all the way to Las Vegas from Tennessee, so they seem to run OK that way.

You can likely fix the gauge, either with the correct diode in line, or by reversing the polarity of the wires.
