I'm in the Austin area right now (Luling to be exact... road trip in a 69 Buick Electra) ... any car related stuff going on this week?
Luling..how are the oil pumps smelling today? The decorations are so cool. http://weburbanist.com/2010/03/21/10-pimped-pump-jacks-give-the-nod-to-urban-oil-art/ I love going down there for the watermellon thump! http://www.watermelonthump.com/ Plus you have two of THE BEST BBQ places in Luling: http://www.lulingcitymarket.com/ and http://lulingbbq.com/ As for car events, there are two good cruise-in's around the Austin Area on Saturday nights, starting after 6-7pm. The first is in the Cabela's Sport Goods parking lot in Buda, south of Austin on I-35. http://www.budagearheads.com/ The second is the Cedar Park Cruise In at the corner of 183 and 1431 in Cedar Park...that's the one I go to, but it's a long way from Luling. It's in the Schlotzkey's parking lot behind the Exxon on the corner. Here's pics: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20145 A couple of other things to check out, there is usually a car gathering in the parking lot of the Top Notch drive in on Saturday evenings. It's the drive in from the movie Dazed and Confused, and it's on Burnet road in north-central Austin. Pics here: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20117 Also, depending on how long you'll be here, the Austin Cars and Coffee event is in Leander, way up north of Austin, from around 9am-1pm on Sunday, Sept 2nd. Here's pics from the last CNC: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20419 Lastly, you really would like to stroll around John's Salvage in Seguin, your close to it in Luling! It'll blow your mind, but go early, it gets HOT out there. He's never crushed anything....some amazing rust-free cars out there. Pics here: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13611&highlight=texas+salvage It's also fun to cruise around downtown Austin at night, and cruise over the "Bat Bridge" http://www.videocityguide.com/austin/listings/congress-bridge-bats on Congress and check out all the weird shops and stuff on South Congress. http://www.google.com/search?q=aust...AHuzoCACw&sqi=2&ved=0CGYQsAQ&biw=1270&bih=803 Austin is a very car-crazy place. Enjoy! -Mike
Mike, thank you for your excellent reply . If it wasn't for the 2 motels in a row I had with very bad wifi connections I could have read it before (but also the app for reading here in the forums on my smart phone isn't cooperating). Had a great time in TX. Would have loved to visit the yard in Sequin, if I was aware of it before, but we visited another one in Belton with quite a few wagons (mainly 50's Chevy's). Will post some photos later this week (first over come a major jet-lag)
