Il allows you to bolt the YOM plate on and just carry your current plates with you. I have done this forever and never been stopped for expired tags.

I wish they'd do that here. I'd have them on my cars!

Georgia recently began to allow for all pre-1970 cars, as after 1970 the tags were renewed by decal, not a new plate.

I quickly changed out my cars, there is no charge to run YOM plates, the current plate must be kept inside the car.

Here's my daily driver, with a typical 1961 plate (yellow)

I found a cool Public Service Commission plate from 1961 and thought it would look nice on my green wagon. I kept my mouth shut when I applied for it at the tag office, and the clerk allowed it without comment! I wonder if I had asked, if she would have denied it....

When in Illinois I collected license plates. A co worker gave me a box full of old mixed Iowa plates and many had different weight codes, stickers, etc on them. Some were even marked FARM or other designations right on the tag.
I actually made the Inqurier with a story and photos about me and my plates on the side of our garage in Illinois. Inquring minds wanted to know!:yahoo:

In North Carolina the vehicle has to be at least 35 years of age before you can run a YOM plate. You have to keep a "current" plate in the car. Funny thing though you don't have to register the number on the vintage plate. One night while driving a 1970 Monte Carlo I had with a YOM plate I got pulled over because the numbers on my vintage plate matched a commercial truck in Wake county. The cop let me go though without any hassle, when he saw the 1970 date on the plate. On the 1976 Jeep J-10 I sold last summer I had a "Farm Truck" YOM plate on it.

License plates in Oregon stay with the car, not with the owner (except personalized or extra-cost plates; which belong to the owner and can be transferred to a new car or can be left on the old car when sold).

There is no YOM plates, per se, on any plates after the early 50's. Plates before that time had the year stamped into the plate, but since that time, the plates were re-registered using metal tabs, initially...then stickers. Plate designs didn't change much from 1950 to present...changing in about 1950, 1956, 1961, 1965, 1975, 1987 and 1988.

On any car, as long as the original plates have been in continual use (registration never lapsed), then they can continue to be renewed at standard registration rates, regardless of age. So it is possible to have the original plates on the car.

If the plates lapse, they can only be renewed if they are of a currently-issued design (Oregon's "tree" plate (used since 1987) or one of our current alternates). If the plate's design is no longer issued and the registration lapses, then you are issued new plates when re-registering the car.

Recently, there seem to have been some changes...but I've never been able to get a straight answer from the DMV. I've noticed that some people seem to have been able to get older-issued plates registered to their cars (even on newer cars, which would have never had those older plates on them). I've had some DMV workers tell me that it cannot be done, but others have said that it can be done ---but they have to register them as "personalized" plates (which cost $100 over the regular registration fees at each re-registration - which is every other year). One DMV worker told me that this can be done, but only if the plates were previously registered to YOUR car (not plates from somebody else's car)...and yet others have said that it can be done as long as the plates are in good condition (legible to law enforcement).

So it appears that you can put "original-style" plates on an older car in Oregon, but I haven't gotten clear answers on this. The ideal, however, would be to have a car that still has the original plates...because they are completely legal and are re-registered at standard rates.

Something I never understood is that my dad has a 2000 Silverado. Out of the blue, they sent him new plates (when we went from red-letters to black-letters.)

I constantly see red letter plates still floating around and they told us that they only send new ones on request or if the old ones are faded to where they're no longer legible. These plates look like new and I still have them. Maybe when I buy the truck, I'll put 'em back on.

I would love YOM plates but it would be hard to give up my personalized plates.
