I was griping to one of my local car club buddies about not having a drive-in close by. Had such a good time at that one up in Dallas this weekend. He clued me in that these is an OLD drive-in still open west of Waco in Gatesville. That about 1 1/2 hours from me here in Austin...but still, might be worth it to get out of town one afternoon. Dinner at Buzzard Billy's in Waco and then a drive in movie. Planning..... The Last Drive In Picture Show The Last Drive In Picture Show is located on Highway 36 near Gatesville, TX ( www.ci.gatesville.tx.us/ ). Opened in 1950 and is still open showing first run films!!! See: www.drive-ins.com/theater/txtlast . Gatesville (Coryell County) Texas The Last Drive-in Picture Show: 254-865-8445, One of the oldest of all the remaining Lone Star Drive-ins has been through a few name changes over the years: it first opened as the Circle S back in 1950; became the Town & Country Drive-in 14 years later; and was renamed The Last Picture Show in 1989. This is also 1of 8 "MoPeds" in America-- an instance where there is both a motor theatre and walk-in theatre located on the same property (the indoor cinema was added in 1972). The Drive-in is open 7 nites, throughout the year- except Christmas eve, and is usually screening a double feature each nite. The same family has been keeping the screen lit-up in gatesville, Texas, for 38 years, and it's very much a family-oriented venue (as policy: no R-rated movies shown). There are still some old speakers here for nostalgia lovers, although the audio is provided primarily with FM (88.1) radio. Admission: for any number of passengers, it's $10 per car on Fri/Sat nites during summer - June/July/August; $5 per car other nites during summer months, and all nites other seasons ( info from: www.driveinmovie.com/TX.htm ).
Drive-In This is great. I hope people go to it and keep it active. Would make a nice cruise nite for car people in the area. I almost feel like filling up the wagon and headed westward ho!
Believe it or not....the small town of Richland Center, WI still has a Drive-In. It shows first run stuff too. Amazing.
We'll bring the large bag of homemade popcorn and two litre bottle of soda like we used to. But we promise not to fool around in the back seat like we used to! Speaking of Wisconsin. I believe on Rt 32 just south of Kenosa was the last drive in movie we went to. There is one near Ocala, Florida on I75 that was sometimes opened. Not sure about it. Here I am talking about going and this one is like 75 mles away.
I don't think your aloud to dance at the drive-in, the popcorn and pop(soda) sounds like a good idea.
Back in the 50's and 60's young couples sometimes danced up front by the playground near the screen before show time. I only know this from pictures and books.
Right I can remember going to the drive-in and swinging on the swings, but there was no dancing. That was wild and crazy times ah?
Life really was fun back then. Yep, we played with total strangers and had fun. Even shared popcorn and candy that wasn't sealed in special containers. My warden is shutting off the lites now. Maybe the movie is starting!
The Silver Moon, near Lakeland FL Florida has plenty of drive ins still operating. Maybe it has something to do with the lack of snow and ice. http://www.driveinmovie.com/FL.htm Many have flea markets during the day, to help pay the bills..
We have an open and functioning drive in here as well, shows first run movies and hosts a swap meet every sunday, the good old Motor View. We usually sneak in food and beer but there isn't much sneak to it when the guy next to you has his bbq grill and a keg. Good times for sure. :2_thumbs_up_-_anima
