hey i have this '66 gto custom wagon. it has a '68 gto 400 bb motor with 4 spd manual. it runs but sounds like misfire. u can hear it. it has an old school distributor with coil on side. i check the spark plug and it look fine and also did the spark plug light on each spark plug wire and they were all flashing. i was wondering could i use an hei distributor??? or should i replace the cap and rotors thats on there now? this was my dad car when he worked on it and i dont have alot of info on it. he pass away this year. so im trying to get it running right and not drive around like it is now thanks

To answer your question, yes, you can use an HEI on that motor. Do you need to? Probably not, but it might help eliminate some possible contributing factors to your problem if we can't pinpoint it. But here's what I'd do first...

First I'd just get it warmed up and while it's running I'd pull one plug wire at a time. See if it makes a difference. If it slows down and speeds up as you take it off or put it on, that cylinder is good. If there is no noticeable change, just make note of which one it is. Go through all of them. If you have one that you didn't see make a change, start there. Maybe swap the plug and or plug wire with another cylinder and try the test again. If the problem moves, you've found it. If it stays the same, you can get a new cap, rotor and a set of points. Replace those and see if things change. You can try a new coil, or I've got one you could borrow and see if it changes anything. I'm sure there is probably one or two in your pile of parts. Heck, you probably have an HEI in that pile somewhere.. (see my post in your intro, I've seen that pile.)

If you want, you can also just stop by one weekend and we'll put our heads together and see what we can find out. We can swap parts back and forth and figure out what's making a difference and what's not...

I'm in Cocoa Beach, just north of Patrick Air Force Base. I sent you a PM with my number if you want to give me a call and maybe bring the car over some time.

Oh, sorry for the confusion... I just read the post where you said you are in Polk County. For some reason I thought you were over here on the east coast. Guess that makes it harder to stop by.

I did pull each spark plug wire at a time while running and none of them made the moor diffrent. Motor didn't speed up or slow down
