So I had the garage door up and I was leaning into the trunk of the Barracuda when I felt the car move...or was it me? Then I heard the roll up garage door over my head shaking in it's tracks and thought, "uh, thats a heavy door, I hope it doesn't come off it's tracks and come down on me and the cars". I stepped out of the garage but by then the shaking had stopped. First time I've felt an earthquake in Virginia.
Talked to a buddy who I was supposed to meet for dinner tonight. He's 34 miles from the epicenter, and he's cleaning up all the stuff that came off the shelves. Mostly a collection of diecast cars and tractors. He hasn't even gone out to the detached garage yet to make sure nothing had fallen on his 71 340 Duster or 68 Fury convertible, but he knows the 70 Challenger RT in the attached garage survived. Also called another buddy who lives even closer. He was on the road driving home from Massachusettes, and didn't feel anything. He's still a couple hours drive from home. I hope their house and his 67 Charger and his wife's 69 Hemi Super Bee are okay.

I hope that every one and every thing is OK. Be safe. There is surprisingly a lot more fault lines and more kinds of fault lines than people think. I could provide some rather scary information on the subject should anybody be interested.
Anyways, there is one over on the eastern side of Missouri and there have been several earthquakes over by/in Tulsa, OK. So we try to keep an eye on thee things.

Not that those who live there will need this but I found this for the rest of us to see it.

Glad you guys are ok in Va Jim. I've felt an earthquake only once here in Ga, it was abt 930am on a Sunday, had my feet up in the recliner and for no apparent reason they started to sway ever so slightly. Later in the day I heard there was a temblor out in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico at that time. Was pretty strange feeling nonetheless.

Ditto on what KK says. Tornado's scare the beejabbers out of me. A shaker from time to time just reminds me that I need to make sure nothing of any significance is stored above my cars. I do remember one in the late 1990's where we thought a train was coming through the building, and it started to sway a tad, and we thought oh oh, this is not going to be good, and then it quit instantly. It was a very old office building and several people chose not to come in to work that day until the building was checked. Most of us just went to our desks and got to work.

Glad to hear no loss of life, and lets hope no significant damage to anything of importance to anyone.

Hey Jim, glad to hear you, your friends and the cars are OK! I bet that was a bit weird. The garage door shaken, you swaying or was it the car? :49:

I felt my first quake in Mexico, and it scared the shivers out of me. Gonna be a lot of folks, even up here in Eastern Canada, but mainly in the US, who will need to breathe deep, or get to sleep early. Makes you ponder what really matters.

I sure did feel it here in SW Virginia. It was the first Earthquake I ever felt. It started out real slow and the house had a knocking rythem to it. I first thought someone was knocking on the door. Then it sounded like large hail hitting the roof (although the sun was out bright), but then I realized it was an Earthquake. The house sure did shake.

No damage around here that I know of, but there is damaged buildings near the epicenter in Mineral, VA.

I am glad you are ok.
Aren't the earthquakes in the US caused by all those American V8s firing up? We don't have heavy earthquakes here in Holland...

5.9 is very big for the east coast. We had a pair of those 30 days apart bag in 95. Surprisingly there was no cracks or broken glass in town. But the media was going crazy around here. 3 news helicopters. I guess they went away in disgust....

22 states felt yesterdays quake. That's big.

Breaking news: Obama interrupts his Martha's Vineyard golfing to announce that the Washington DC earthquake occurred on an obscure fault-line that runs under the White House and is known as "Bush's Fault"

Tornadoes are why I deal with earthquakes. I choose to avoid tornadoes.
When earthquakes happen I tell Chuck Norris to stop doing push ups.

People don't talk much about the noise of the earthquake. My first quake (that I felt) was the Symar quake on Tuesday, Feb. 9th, 1971 (6.6 on the scale). It hit at 6:01AM. I was still sleeping in my apartment on little Santa Monica Bl. in west L.A. Building was built back in the early 50's, so I imagine it was quite 'loose' Everything was rattling, street lights were going off then on. Sounded light a train going by. Seemed to last for a long time. Actual length was maybe 30 seconds. I remember being in the office of the restaurant where I worked when a fairly big aftershock hit later that evening.
