Hear me out lol - I'm thinking of using linoleum floor material to recover the 'wood grain' of my doors and tailgate on my 89 Electra. My reasons being: It comes in wood grain ( I can even have parquet lol) It comes in other zany patterns and colours too. Easy to cut and apply. Durable. Cushioning for other peoples car doors. I can apply straight over my existing finish after a good clean and degrease. Cheap. The climate here in Belize is relentless; blistering sun on the coast with sand all over. I'm not complaining btw
I'm having a hard time with this one. It sound so different. The one big problem I see is getting it to form around the wheel openings. I've been doing paint and body repair for almost 40 years and have applied plenty of decals including woodgrain. The whell opening area has compound curves and usually requires some heating to get the decal to conform. I'm not sure any floor covering would be that forgiving. Other than that though it just might work.
Thanks, that's a good point.....I guess I would cut short of the change in direction of the body panel as it abruptly becomes the lip of the arch. I would then have to seal that edge or it might peel upwards.
I was thinking the same thing. The color could fade quickly. Also, would the backing retain moisture and promote rust?
The idea wasn't bad to me. But I really have to agree that it wouldn't last or be easy to apply. :banghead3:
Only you could come up with that! ROTFLMFAO!!!! Are you his lost, forgotten son? CatModel, you could easily handpaint the woodgrain. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but a few guys have done it here. Just look under the wood grain section. I have to remove my vinyl in a few years and that's what I'll do. My car is from Guadalajara, and it sat in the Mexican sun for 7 years without moving. It was fried. I removed it in 2007 and installed new stuff from J. C. Whitney for under $100, back then. It's not hard to paint it. and there's lots of guys that have shown how. Saludos y Mucha suerte!
