On my Cougar the solenoid that is supposed to kick up the idle is not working. It has 10.6 vdc to it when I select the a/c but it doesn't move. Of course I can't find one on the www or in a parts store. As usual everyone lists one for a non-ac car so those retract when the car is shut off. I need one that extends when the a/c is selected and it also has a vacuum line connection. I would guess that the vacuum retracts it when a/c is de-selected.

So, either you folks hook me up or it's off the the JY looking for a working one.

All ideas will be considered.:D I haven't investigated whether it can be disassembled for cleaning/repair or not.

I'll have to do some more research. Mine looks very similar to that but has a vacuum nipple on it. If I have to sit at a traffic light I just pop it in to nuetral otherwise the rpm is too low and it vibrates.

Obviously I'm kinda stupid and just don't understand engineer nomenclature. The solenoid is a TSP-VOTM = Throttle Solenoid Positioner-Vacuum Operated Throttle Modulator.

    Who knew?:taz:

Any post 1981 Mustang/Capri has them too. The Fairmont/Zephyr CHILTON manual lists the main part number, but its out in the car. The beginning digits might be E0 or E1xx-19xxx-xx. I've also seen them called vacuum amplifiers.

Checked the Chilton book. They've got it under the Carburetor subheading with no specific number. The carb parts range is 9510 (AKA E2xx-9510-xx)

Found this nice tuneup spec page though (spanish, but its all numbers) They show the idle with that valve (TSP-VOTM) as 700 RPM (Note 1, at bottom)

If you can get a part number, you might check out this guy's NOS parts lists. Emissions items are in the nos9000.pdf and AC related are in the nos19000.pdf. Both are small files (under 10,000 bytes).

    De nada, compadre! ;)

Call up your friendly antique Ford dealer with the old microfiche cards. He should be able to give you the PN and if Ford still have some. Funny that the 1981 Capri I6 didn't have that unit. It had Factory AC.

I just double-checked the Chilton list. Some vacuum/emissions parts are also in the 12000 series - Ignition.

That NOS parts site has lots of Fairmont/Zephyr parts still. Even Falcon/Comet parts. Must've been a dealership inventory clear out.

 I'm confused, is this part operated by vacuum or electrical?

Some are both. The electrical part gets a vacuum impulse and shifts it to temporarily suspend the AC vacuum until heavy acceleration is done (IE. the driver stops climbing Mount Everest or racing with a BMW! :rofl2:

Thunderbirds with a 3.3L six? That's news to me!

I like what they're supposed to do. Give the vacuum over to the distributor to achieve maximum advance, but I thought that the vacuum reservoir and check-valve (VCV) were supposed to do that. I guess it wouldn't hurt.

Both. I assumed electric to extend and vacuum to retract.

Does it work? Giving you more vacuum for distributor advance on hard acceleration?
