Have any of you painted a brake booster? What did you use and how did it work out? I know that from the factory they come plated. But I just bought a reman and it's looks like doggy-doo.
I've used Tremclad primer and paint (Rustoleum). So far, so good. Took a lot of wire brushing and sanding, but it worked. Maybe straight POR-15?
I believe Eastman may sell a kit to do them so they look "similar" to factory. I'll have to go look since it has been a long time since I've wandered through their website.
Go to Pepboys or Autozone and buy a can of brake caliper paint. It impervious to brake fluid and solvent, it dries hard as a rock and very smooth and shiny. and it comes in many different colors even black. Kenny.
Eastwood sells the brake booster painting kit. It simulates the gold cad plating if it was that originally. If you want original better off buying a plated booster. By the time you buy the booster and the kit you can buy a plated booster for less money. You can also get gold and silver spray paint and do your own, hit it with gold then mist it with silver, a green is also used in the kit but I've done backing plates and other parts and they look okay with just the gold and silver, cleared over it afterwards. Takes a little practice but you can get stuff looking pretty close to plated. No comparison to the real thing though. At car shows the Eastwood kit painted ones stick out like a sore thumb next to a car with the real thing.
Nothing beats the looks of real gold cad plating. I would love to have a new plated booster. Mine is painted, and has the obligatory melted paint line below the master cylindar. I have yet to have a master cylindar that doesn't seep a small amount of fluid from the back of the cap in this car. Don't know if its cheap re-mans, or the nature of the design with the master cylindar at an angle and not level. Don't know why I never thought of brake caliper paint. Thanks for the tip, fordaholic69. I'll repaint next time I service the brakes.
Caliper paint, good idea. I'm feeling pretty lazy, and it's not a show car. It's already got a dull dark gray finish, and I'm not sure what it is, but prepping it might be more work than I care to bother with.
Yup it was more bother than I cared for. Installed the new booster today. Became a human pretzel with double-jointed fingers.
