Not perfect but a good starting point.

 

Wish I had a penny for every mile I spent in a 283 with a power glide. And this one, being the Impala, has those classic three tail lights. As Markfnc says, not perfect, but a good starting point. Just fix the radiator leak and start showing her off while you tackle the rest.

I sent it to him. He likes it. He plans to follow the auction. He may bid on it, but we'll just have to wait and see.

 

IMO, the 283 is the bare minimum for power on these. A 4-barrel 327 would be my preference.......

 

That's what my buddy has in his 65 Impala 4 door hardtop. Swapped in a turbo 350 in place of two speed powerglide.
This wagon would be the perfect stablemate for it.

 

Absolutely. The 283 was adequate, but a 327 had much better torque for everyday driving. Where the 283 felt a little strained, the 327 (even a base 2 barrel) would just be effortless. IMO the 327 was Chevy's best engine of all time. In different states of tune it powered everything from the low end wagons to bad boy Corvettes.

I agree with the 327 being what they all should have at least come with, Imagine driving my mothers 65 Bel Air wagon with the I6, powerglide, and A/C! I remember her hating that car because it could not get out of its own way with the A/C on, but I was riding in it when she totaled out 2 VW bugs with it. Apparently the 2nd one was the 5th one she had hit in 10 years. She didn't take it to well when my Father drove it to NAS Corpus Christi and had his squadrons painter add 5 German crosses to the drivers side door indicating she was now considered a Navel Ace!
I still remember my older brother having to sand off and repaint the door the next time my father was deployed! Hers was the same colors as this Impala. It was the only car with A/C our family owned until after all the kids moved out!

 

This is the best story I've heard so far today!

 

Cammerjeff's Father was a brave man. Regarding that 65 Bel Air wagon, it is surprising to me that I6 kept moving when the a/c kicked in. The compressors in that era really soaked up HP.
