Good story with an absolutely great opening sentence.

 

Yeah it sounds like one of those two guys walk into a bar joke. Lol

 

I did that to a poor muffler on a '70 Dodge pickup, as I decelerated for a 90° left turn. Lit me up for 360 degrees, and the biker that was on my rear bumper was no longer on my rear bumper. A steel can that had had Hawaiian Punch in it and a pair of muffler-sized band clamps put it back together.

 

I swapped my 51 Ford with my neighbor's 56 Ford for a Prom or something. Mine had a flathead six with a 3 spd OD. I knew he would run the hell out of it. As it turned out, he put Sunoco 260 in it for some unknown reason. When I got it back the next day, the muffler was exploded and the tailpipe where it went over the hump was split wide open. We used to turn the key off while the car was in gear, coast a bit, and then turn it back on. This filled the exhaust with unburned fuel, which would backfire and shoot flames out the tailpipe when the key was turned back on. I suspect that's what he did.

No, it's freaky. I can see so many unsafe things that could go wrong.

 

I could never have that set up, cause it would scratch my drip rails. That upper bunk is definitely for the dogs or kids.

 

Sure, but same could be said for countless numbers of generic private vehicle/trailer combos going down the road on a daily basis.
These kits were sold by a company called Harmon Shadow, they were not back yard built, so I'm sure they underwent testing and were safety certified. If not, the first State Trooper that saw one would have impounded it and that would have been the end of them.
This wouldn't be my choice for hauling a trailer for a plethora of reasons. But dang, I still maintain that it's fantastic.
