Will Today's Wagons Ever Be Classics?

In the movie Star Trek Nemesis,Picard decides to ram a Romulan ship with the Enterprise.An impressive sequence.As the two vehicles came to a stop,stuck to each other in one huge piece of wreckage,I said,"See,it's good to have the stationwagon." The rest of the small group of people in the room laughed and agreed...Will we one day think of Ford Escort ZX2 wagons like we do our 86 or 68 Colony Parks or our 77 Aspen wagon? Doubtfull...Some cars are just not meant to end up classics,even if they last long enough to qualify...I will never think of any Toyota Corolla as a classic,it's just not going to happen!Much of what's been made during the last twenty years,is in that same boat,for me.

 

There isnt a vehicle built these days thats worth its weight in monkey ball sweat. The are all junk, parts are all made by the cheapest bidder and lack any quality what so ever. I worked for FORD for almost 7 years and we had trucks comin in for balljoints and tierods before the 36k warrenty expired, why? 1. No grease fittings and 2. pisspoor quality! My 92 Roadie has 11 greas fittings under it and IMO thats not 1/2 of what should be there. It has 161k on it now and still has the original balljoints, tierods and wheelbearings in it and they are all still tight. All these communist footlocker sized cars that are on the road, you can have them, Im not putting my life or the lives of my wife and kids into one for the sake of economy and a greener earth, put my 92 Landyacht in a headon collision with one and I know I will walk away, possibly even be able to have my car fixed, but they will be cleaning you up with a shovel and sponge and making Pepsi cans out of your Honda Fit, Chevy Aveo, or Smartcar.

im sure people thought that all the 6cyl nova's and covairs wouldnt be collectors items. but they are. i dont know though.... the newer cars are so much alike.. its pretty bad when hot wheels puts wheels on a metal blob and it looks like a car.

 

But.....Just how much does monkey ball sweat WEIGH??

 

Not much, so that makes all new vehicles absolutely worthless!

 

In the cases of the two cars you mentioned,and the Falcons and Dart/Valiants,I think it's their bad press from when they were new that makes them the desired classics they are today. "Sixes are slow." "That thing's going to flip over and take your arm off." I think part of it is,how well you take care of it,when it first shows up.People have gotten to the point where they're running their Toyotas and Nissans into the ground,like they used to do with their American cars in the 70's. When you don't baby these things like people do their MBZ's,they're nothing but disposable junk. And when you drive them like you have to be carefull in them,they last a good long time. Too many people aren't seeing past the end of their lease---except to see the next car they'll be driving.And,I've noticed that;as cars have allegedly gotten safer to be in,when you crash them,the more dangerously people have been driving them. It used to be,people in Volvos were slow and steady and carefull,now they zoom around like everyone else.Like(1)we're supposed to stay out of their way and(2)because they're in a "safe car" they can risk that accident in the intersection...If they're not thinking their cars are going to end up classics,why should we?

 

So how close to the Monkey did you get?

I just went walking 5 blocks to the grocery store. An average house up here is worth about $80,000. The Southend of the city, prices are like $290,000, and further North they're about $180,000.

I counted the newer Asian cars, and figured them at about $20,000. Every 4 cars buys a house. 86 of those. 21 homes.

And whats your house worth in 5 years? Now whats the Wagons worth? BIG difference between what you pay for something and what they are actually worth. There isnt 1 stinkin vehicle worth 1/10 of the sticker or asking price, especially when the parts as made for pennys and sold for $50-200+

There isnt one new car that I would even consider taking a loan out for. Not when the second you sign the paperwork it depreciates in value 20% Then pay on that pile of **** for 5 years and its worth 1/20 of the bought price. A fool and their money will always soon be parted.

 

The only way I'll ever buy a brand new vehicle is if I win the lotto and have money to burn, and then only for bragging rights. I'm more than happy with my older vehicles. They are like older houses, they have a charm and style all their own that you can't duplicate.

 

i dunno, i like the mazda3 id buy one of them, maybe a year old so i dont have to take such a hit in the value dept. id never get rid of my wagon. but id like a dd so i can keep my roadie nice. i do kinda miss having a pickup too

 

The Mazda3 is a fun ride. I'm single, but when I pick up my friend and his girlfriend, and her sister and 3 kids laughing and playing in the back, no one is cramped up and there is still plenty of room for shopping bags. I can't think of any newer car that could compare.

 

oh if i were single id still have my roadie, except i would have fashoned surfboard rack for her. and have a beater to keep the miles off.

Nice cars, we almost bout a used one a couple years ago but you say......4 adults, 3 kids, any plenty of room for shopping bags in a clown car???...

 

Hey, Ian...a surfboard rack in PA???
I do like those Mazda's. They go and they handle...fun driver. But no replacement for the wagon. Wagons are, quite simply, the Great American car. And as for new cars...Blackfoot said it all above.
