Maybe not the prettiest Buick engine, but plenty assertive.

Dear JohnnyWagon and pretty Buick engines for wagons fans,

I have a weary looking 300 in my 1965 Buick Special wagon now. It is about to be replaced with something a bit more assertive:

It is no show toy either. It developed 509 horsepower and 540 foot-pounds of torque on the dynamometer. Trying to line up the parts so it can finally be installed in my trusty wagon.

Trying not to spam this forum with pics of my new "baby", but there are more photos here if you are curious:

My vote would be the 401 nailhead... actually any nailhead. very cool engines. I like that one too however... has very much a "nailhead" flavor to it. Love da' Buicks mon! Someday I'll get MINE going.. (not a wagon.. '55 hardtop).

Not a nailhead, but painted nailhead green.

Dear 73Super and Buick engine fans,

Actually, it isn't a nailhead, but is painted like a 65 nailhead. All 65 Buick engines where painted the "nailhead green" color - including the 300 cid small-block V-8 that's in the car.

Alas, it got degraded into Chevy blue when first rebuilt in 1979, and despite my complaints stayed Chevy blue when the engine was rebuilt again in 2000. It bothered my Dad when he was still alive that our trusty wagon had lost her nailhead green engine. So it is one of the satisfactions of this project to give the car back an engine in the correct paint color.

    Cheers, Edouard

I am aways partial to the 66 with the space ship air cleaner like this one, I don't car for all the extra red highlights in the engine compartment though.

The older Buick engines with the stand up valve covers always stand out, no matter what color they're painted.
    Ditto the Chevy 409.
Not that there is anything wrong with small block Cevys, (there isn't) they just don't stand out from the crowd, lookswise.

Ok I am also alittle partial to the Pontiacized 215 I have built for my 77 Astre Formula (not a wagon sorry) it is a 63 215, with modified Rover 4.0 valve covers and 6qt oil pan, Buick 350 HEI, and Edelbrock performer intake.

And a few shots of the litle nonlong roof it is goinf into

I just realized I forgot to post most of the pic's of my 215, the other mod I forgot to mention was the Buick 231 V-6 Oil filter adapter so the filter will clear the K member of the little Astre. The valve covers are from a Late model rover 4.0, they are cast aluminum, powder coated Semi gloss black, and have had the PMD and Arrow head logos engraved into them prior to powder coating.

Thought a nailhead was a much harder swap?

Dear NorcalBuicknut and Buick engine fans,

I did look briefly into going with a nailhead engine for my trusty wagon, but was told it was infinitely harder to swap than the more modern big-block. Was it a real battle to put it in?
