Sometime within the last year or so South Carolina started allowing people to register and use year of manufacture license plates if the car or truck was at least 30 years old.

I finally got my plate approved and it sure looks like it belongs! HRP

They just started that here in Utah as well, would love to find some 74' plates for my wagon. Those look great by the way.

Ontario has been doing it for several years. The only problem is that as of 74, our plates didn't have year of issue on them, which makes it difficult for cars built after that.

Virginia has that too. Most of my cars are registered with YOM plates that I've picked up at car shows. Limited use though. Only for cars registered as antique. "Limited pleasure use within 250 miles of home and only driving to car shows or parades if outside the 250 mile radius. Can not use as regular transportation and can not be driven to work." Pretty much covers all my driving of the old cars anyway.

Despite the price that our lovely provincial govt. charges here ($250 plus) just for registering them I thought it was well worth it.

Today's custom plate would cost the same and I beleive that the YOM is much more classier on a restored to stock wagon.
Found a great near mint set on eBay for about $20 and happy that I did so.
There are no restrictions like they have on the "historic" plates.

I believe that all states and provinces should do it.

Delaware allows period correct plates as long as the number on the plate is within the range of numbers that were in circulation at that time. It seems the colors for the Delaware plates changed every 10 - 15 years or so. For 1958, the plates were much smaller than the standard size today and were black porcelain with stainless numbers.

hotrodprimer Great lookin on that nice ole wagon. Also nice that you got 54 at beginning. Wife wants to know what the E was for? Hey, she's interested in cars, or just nosey!
On my 1955 Florida plate the first two numbers 42 were for the county. Perhaps that is the reason for the E or for the weight as some states did.

I don't have the YOM plates on my wagon, yet. But I do have them on my other old cars. In Virginia, in odd numbered years, the plates were white with black lettering, and in even number years they were black with white lettering (as you see on my 67 Coronet and 68 Barracuda below). The even number year Virginia plates look like your South Carolina 1954 plates.
For now I have ugly "antique" tags on my wagon (till I invest in a set of YOM 1967 plates for it).

The "Antique" Virginia plates, are also black with white lettering, but they are thick flat rectangular pieces of metal.

The wagon ran great and the only problem we experienced was the drain on the air conditioner leaked on my wife's left foot! HRP
