Yes, it's a shame so many people are being affected by the string of tornado weather heading in the upper mid-west right now. Scores of people have lost their homes and all their possessions.

Coming a bit closer to 'home' for us is this unfortunate owner of a nice Chevy clam shell........
Do we know the owner here?

Well, it doesen't look like it was moved to that spot from another one, unless it was a fluke that it landed upright and symetric to that driveway.
The good thing about classics going way up in price is that it should force their owners to start thinking about what precautions they should be planning on, when and where disasters are likely to happen. Especially there in the Tornado Belt. As we see, it wasn't parked in any garage that evidently would have at least remained standing, had it been built with brick walls like the buildings seen still standing

Notice that the buildings still standing don't have roofs. We'd been in New Orleans at several large car events just before Katrina. I always wondered about some of those nice old cars where a lot of flooding and hurricane damage was.
If you've been watching the latest weather news all year you would also notice a lot of brick and cement block buildings have been totaled. On the plus side, it's making the good old cars and wagons more rare.

So sad. Looks as if they lost everything. Hope they were not hurt.

This is why anyone who has a halfway decent older classic car needs to consider having good insurance for it. Driver\liability only type insurance on a car like this would add insult to injury...

LOTS of them went underwater. Some guys on other forums lived down there and posted photos of their VERY nice cars that were flooded up to the A-pillars and roofs for several weeks. Some guys restored them anyways...

There were a few quick-to-act guys who literally jacked their cars up on wood cribbing, high enough that the highest water only were on the wheels. I saw a couple pics of a guy with one or two Beemers(?) that were cribbed like that.

I would be sick. This is exactly why I left the Midwest to move to an area that has about the least chances of these kind of disasters. I’m sad for him.

Absolutely! I've always had FULL coverage on the Way-Back Machine, even though I've never made a claim on it. Technically, I could afford the loss if something happened to it, but i would rather not be in that position.

OK, get this - I didn't remember what my actual costs were on the lines of coverage for the Bonneville Safari, so I just looked them up. FULL coverage for the whole year is $336.50, and most of that is the liability portion. I pay just $27 TOTAL for Comp and Collision, for the whole year, with a $200 deductible.

Full insurance coverage won't make up for a destroyed classic car or reproduce non-obtainable and no longer existing replacement parts. Plain common sense is more effective than the best insurance policy.
Nobody in their right mind walks barefoot through San Francisco's carpet of needles. The same vigilance should be used by owners of classic cars

I can't imagine that it was the only reason, judging by the scenery there

Well, you got me there Poison. I always tell people that I left one set of skyscrapers in Chicago for another set of Skyscrapers in New Mexico. Doesn’t hurt that I can drive an old car almost everyday either. I sure couldn’t have afforded the storage there as well.

I would have moved out of Michigan, to go to New Mexico, even if I didn't own a classic car, simply because it looks like a pleasant state to live in, not only because it doesen't snow there. I have this thing for red sand, low to no humidity, colonial Spanish architechtural flair and, of course, the cars. Except for Low-Riders, of course

$27 is cheap for full coverage, but what does that mean in $$ for a total loss? And would it cover natural disaters?

That was a beautiful, well loved CE, had to be heart breaking for the owner. Looked like a Ohio plate? Hopefully, no loss of life there.

The Safari is insured for it's 'market value' - it's not a 'stated amount' policy. And yes, it would be covered for any natural disaster, as any normal auto policy would, as long as you pay for that coverage ('Comprehensive') Auto policies aren't as restrictive in this regard as home-owner policies are. There are some limitations on towing expenses, electronic (stereo) coverage, etc., but that's about it.
